Intolerance in breast milk

Hi all I combi feed and have noticed my baby has more of an allergy or intolerance to my breast milk then he does to formula. He gets slight hives/rash not very noticeable but because I’m so close to his face all the time I see it and he seems to spit up more and farts There’s dairy in his formula so wondering what else could it be that I’m eating that he’s not agreeing with

When I was breast-feeding, I had to stop eating a lot of things. Including dairy, spices, beans. My little one kept getting super gassy even after cutting out dairy and spiciness so I started taking out beans and anything that was in the same family as beans and it made a huge help for me. I think once the baby was about 5 to 6 months was when I started eating things that I stopped eating, I did it portion so that her body could get used to it

I noticed strong spices makes my baby gassy and his poop was loose. I basically try to eat as clean now as possible with soups. Things like beans, lentils, too much cumin. Basically what makes you gassy makes him gassy. I still drink milk tho and he is okay with milk. I guess it’s all trial and error which can be really hard for moms because we want to make sure they are okay always. My lactation consultant said no restrictions but I notice differences so I’ll keep making them for him

Thank you both I will try removing spices as never thought it could be that as he wouldn’t cry so much as just fart and have a very slight rash but it’s something I have regularly being Caribbean so will see what happens when I remove it! Poor bubba probably still has to deal with last nights chipotle today😬

How can you tell which is the cause if you’re giving both every day? I was doing formula for the first two weeks while my milk increased. My baby could cry for hours, very gassy and projectile vomit. I thought the problem was the formula and my mom thought it was the breastmilk, since she never had experience with breastmilk and always thought formula was better. I did what I thought was better and completely quit formula and tried breastmilk only. Within a week I had a whole new baby. Now, my baby is 8 months and anytime I try to reintroduce dairy, he develops hives and bumpy skin, more gassy and doesn’t sleep well. My suggestion, if you need to continue with formula, would be to try sensitive formula, hypoallergenic formula or a goats milk formula. Maybe try eliminating dairy from your diet. I ended up not needing to eliminate dairy completely from my diet as baby was able to handle it better through my breastmilk than when he consumed it directly.

@Savannah We’ve had periods where I’ve just done formula whether it’s because I’ve been out and had to abstain and then pump and dump after etc and even if it’s just 48hrs his skin would clear up he doesn’t cry so much ehen pooping digesting the food and then we’d go back to breast and he’ll start fussing and farting about an hour or two after the feed. I breastfeed throughout most days when my partner is at work and he will fuss cry be gassy and will be fine in the evening when his dad takes over shift with bottles but when I nurse in the evening it’s the same as during the day so I’ve even started giving him formula in the night just to make sure he gets a peaceful night sleep I feel kinda cruel persisting with breast tbh because it upsets his belly/bowels but keen to get to the root cause
