i was diagnosed with GD at 28 weeks (now 35 weeks), i was told he’s measuring big and to control GD by my diet (so far going well haven’t needed medication). i think baby has slowed down his growth. at 28 weeks, he was 2lbs 13oz, at 31 weeks he had nearly double and was 4lbs 1oz, and then at 34 weeks i really thought he’d be a lot bigger but was 5lbs 7oz so his weight slowed down due to diet control. they’ve still said you can have a normal vaginal birth with a bigger baby and so far he’s not at a size that would be cause of concern for them. i’ve got my next growth scan on the 15th or 16th of April where i’ll be 38 weeks so we will see then what might be suggested. i’ve been told that they like to induce people with GD at 38/39 weeks but i haven’t been personally asked about any induction yet so hoping to find out more at my 38 week scan xx
@Rosie thank you! All the best to you too, I hope everything goes well for you!
it’s hard due to how far you are, but i’d say just be careful of your diet for now and i presume you can monitor your sugars now? got the kit and everything? my diet control made him go from 92nd percentile to 68th percentile which is pretty good xx
@Sinead Good to know his weight slowed down. Not long for you to go now!
@Rosie no not long now!! also i don’t know if it’s different for different trusts, but in case either of you haven’t been told yet, i was told that i have to give birth at hospital (my original plan was birth centre but oh well..), and me and baby has to stay in for at least 24 hours after so they can monitor our sugars (with my first i was home within six hours after having him lol). they also told me they will be taking babies bloods at around 4 hours and 8 hours old to check his levels. this all makes me nervous, i don’t want to stay in but i know its for the best. i was also informed that HALF of woman diagnosed with GD end up developing type 2 diabetes within 5 years after having the baby! that’s quite a large number so was told to continue being careful with diet after birth xxx
Yes I don't like the idea of staying in hospital for long. I've never been in hospital before, but as long as our little ones are safe. I knew it increased your risk, but didn't realise half! Good point about being careful with diet. I'm really looking forward to a burger take out when first home with baby though 😆
I had gestational diabetes, got diagnosed around 28 weeks. I had a normal vaginal delivery. They booked me for an induction at 39 weeks and funnily enough, my waters broke that very morning at home at 4am! I then went into labour naturally the afternoon but she came quickly, no doctor intervention however. They also kept saying about my baby’s abdomen measuring big… she was 6lbs 2 when she was born!
I was in the exact same situation as you. I had an induction at 39+3 but took 3 days before labour actually started. Baby finally arrived at exactly 40 weeks, he was not as big as they had predicted. I ended up having a forceps delivery because I was exhausted after spending all this time in the hospital and not being able to properly rest. I was out of the hospital the day after I gave birth and recovered well and quite rapidly though! If I were pregnant again and ended up in the same situation I think I would say no to the induction - unless baby still hasn’t arrived at 42 weeks - as it’s really this that led to me needing the forceps at the end. All the best xx
@Sally if you don’t mind me asking, do you remember how much they were saying baby was weighing at previous growth scans? my scan at 34 weeks they’ve said he was 5lbs 7oz, i’ll then be told another estimate at my 38 week growth scan, but i’m curious to see the accuracy etc as some people have told me that they were told they were having big babies and that wasn’t the case at all etc x
@Sinead sorry I didn’t realise I’d had a response! I cannot remember the measurements at all now unfortunately - I just know they said she was measuring bigger than she actually was, and she wasn’t too big at all when she was born
I can't help you with your query, but I've also been diagnosed at 28 weeks. I'm waiting to see if size of abdomen will have reduced on 34 week scan. All the best to you.x
