Advice

Anyone had a similar situation? I had my midwife appointment 2 days ago , and a month after having my last baby they found out I had Strep B . I would need antibiotics during labour if I still have it with this baby and having a vaginal birth, so they’ve already suggested considering a c section . I’m only 14w , and feel like this is quite early to be discussed ? Anyone else had experiences of Strep B during labour ?

What?! I had strep b last time and still have it now. It was known in my last pregnancy. No one suggested a C-section as a result, for either pregnancy. There’s no need, that’s what the antibiotics are for. Do you have anything else making it a higher risk pregnancy?

@Hannah the only thing mentioned also was that my stitches got infected 2 times after my last birth , she said to avoid any further issues . Not sure what ill decide tbf xx

Well I sadly don’t have any medical training to comment further, but if you’re considering a C-section you’ll need to talk to a dr anyway so can raise concerns 🙂 I’ve just never personally heard of it being an indication for C-section. Was the infection in your stitches GBS? Because people get infected stitches all the time, GBS or no. And I had a LOT of stitches including internally and didn’t get an infection. I hope you can get some answers and feel comfortable in whatever decision you make!

I just had my 16 week appointment and I had group strep b in my placenta last time, so it was bad! But she told me I can absolutely have a VBAC and that she will help me to do a birth preferences sheet that is super robust to help me get that. You absolutely do not need a c-section because of it. I would recommend you look here…. https://www.rcog.org.uk/for-the-public/browse-our-patient-information/group-b-streptococcus-gbs-in-pregnancy-and-newborn-babies/

This also has so much useful info! https://gbss.org.uk/info-support/about-group-b-strep/what-is-group-b-strep/

With everything you just want to ask them the risks using the BRAIN method. Benefits, risks, alternatives, (your) intuition, (what if you do) nothing. It’s a really helpful way to talk through all the pros and cons of a situation using the facts. If you say that to your midwife they will know what you are asking them I’m sure!

I tested positive for strep b 3 times in my first pregnancy and was just told to have antibiotics before labour if vaginal birth… anyway my labour was too quick I never got them but baby was absolutly fine just had to be monitored in hospital for 12 hours solid after birth. I’m pregnant with my second and just had a consultant appointment at 16 weeks… no mention of needing a c-section but gave me 2 options of testing again for strep B or just straight up say to have the antibiotics x
