I was recommended an epidural at the same time as the drip and because of this I didn’t feel a single contraction so I had quite a good experience. From breaking waters to delivery it was 6 hours. Ended In episiotomy and forceps delivery. I would be happy to do it like that again
I would never get the hormone drip, membrane sweep or have my water manually broken. My first labor, my water trickled and I had contractions for 3 days. After 2 days, I only dilated 1cm. They had to give me oxytocin because i was a high risk for infection. I immediately got an epidural, because I KNOW it makes contractions A LOT worse. Having your water manually broken can cause labor to be prolonged and/or irregular and it is just one intervention after the next. I had one intervention after the next, because my membrane sweep caused me to leak amniotic fluid and the rest followed. It started with a membrane sweep, then oxytocin drip, then epidural, then manually breaking the rest of my amniotic sac and ended up with a C-section. I think it is best to wait for your body to go into labor naturally and only intervene if absolutely necessary.
ahh thank you all! I feel like I have been against induction altogether, they just keep trying to push it on me due to baby measuring big. I keep telling myself to just try and wait and let my body go naturally, and I feel now there’s a reason I feel this way😂 I was induced with my first but my waters ended up going naturally before they had a bed available for breaking them and then contractions started the following day naturally and I had baby within a few hours, was just very traumatic as it progressed so quickly I could only have gas and air and had to have forceps and episiotomy so just really scared for that again😂 I’ve heard a lot of people say hormone drip is awful! I’m hoping after todays sweep and being 3cm, my body goes into labour naturally within the next day or two😂🙈 x
If your labor was that quick, then I don’t see why they think a oxytocin induced labor would be ideal for you. Oxytocin increases the intensity of contractions and is supposed to make you dilate quicker. Also, ultrasounds can’t estimate baby’s size very accurately, so I would take that with a grain of salt. Try researching different birthing positions this time and try to stay as relaxed as possible during labor and delivery. Research the fetal ejection reflex as well! Your body has done this all before, so it knows what it is doing. My sister had pitocin (brand name for oxytocin in the US) during her first labor. She has a high pain tolerance (like me) and she could not handle the contractions after pitocin. Her second birth was fast and unmedicated. She popped that baby out while squatting and holding onto the bed rails backwards. She did tear, but she healed really well (tearing typically heals better than a surgical cut).
@Kassia thank you!! I feel like they’re just desperate to get him out due to him ‘measuring big’ but my first was born big and like I say I done it with just gas and air, I had to have forceps and it was painful but it was all ok in the end! Between Friday and Saturday they rang me 7 times asking me to come in for induction even tho each time I kept saying no and the only way I’ll have induction is if it’s my last and only option😂 I am eager to get him out now but I just don’t want to have to go through things like the drip etc if it’s not actually necessary, I’d rather just wait and hopefully it happens naturally but when they keep on at me it just keeps messing with my head and confusing me😂😂 I’m going to research birthing positions as I’ve seen a few people say it can actually make things easier when you’re not just lay on your back giving birth haha! Thank you for your advice I really appreciate it x
With my first 2 babies i was 3cm when I went to be induced and both times they broke my waters and then contractions started by themselves and I didn't need the hormone drip. If you've managed to get to 3cm already your body is getting ready for labour too which is great Good luck
How big is your baby? I had a 9lb baby at 39 weeks. I started bleeding like a heavy period and went in to be checked and I was 3 cm. They wanted to pop my waters but they ended up going on their own and she arrived 50 mins after my waters popping! If are 3 cm you are close to being in labour and if baby is big there’s a chance they could come quickly once it does all start. I also gave birth on all fours with just gas and air 😅 x
@Christie when I went for a growth scan at 38+3 they said he was weighing 9lbs8oz at that time so have been pushing me for an induction for this weekend since that appointment! My first was born 9lbs8oz and it did progress really quick but ended on forceps and I just felt very traumatised after as I lost so much blood I passed out twice afterwards so I’m just really scared of going through the same😂 I had a sweep Monday just gone and I was 1-2cm so the fact I’m now 3cm I do feel like my body is just getting ready to do this naturally and I feel I should wait at least a couple days now to see! Thank you x
@Amy I wouldn’t really mind if I knew after they broke my waters it would all happen without the hormone drip, but because there’s a chance I think I’m just worried/scared😂 i went from 4cm to fully dilated with my first within literal minutes so maybe the same will happen again😂😂 just need to give my body a couple days to progress naturally I suppose! Thank you x
I had this. At first I had an epidural so I didn’t feel much but then it failed and then it was horrendous 😩 ended up with a forceps delivery
I can understand but remember no two births are the same so it could be completely different for you this time. Mine were both very different. Long and with forceps for first compared with short and no interventions for second. I also bled a lot with my second but it was fine and they were prepared as I started the labour with bleeding. They’d put a cannula in my hand upon arrival and as soon as I’d given birth I was put on a hormone drip straight away to slow it down. Everything was fine. Trust them they know what they’re doing and you are in good hands. I’d definitely read up on the stats and risks of bleeding and bigger babies. Or even the chance of bleeding heavily for a second time. Hopefully you’ll find the chances are still very low and that should give you some peace of mind 🥰 x
I would wait as it sounds like your body is already getting ready for baby! If your first was quick then your second might be too. My first I went from 5cm to baby being born in just over an hour. My second I went from 3cm to baby in 30 mins!! (My water broke 10-15 mins before delivery) Waaay less pain second time, no ring of fire, just felt baby wriggling out. Your body has done this before so it knows what to do. But if you go in and get your waters broke you may not need the drip Definitely look at birth positions, my favourites are kneeling with arms supported, squatting, on all fours, definitely NOT laying in bed on back. But you have to do what you feel is right in the moment, keep moving, keep active, and if you want to lay in bed go for it, whatever your body tells you to do
Honestly would never have the hormone drip again I did it with gas and air and will never ever do it again it was legal torture xx
