Concerns

Hi. I’m wondering whether anyone is experiencing the same or has some advice. My LO is 22 months old and he is very developmentally behind. I’ve reached out to my GP, HV etc but they keep telling me to wait things out but I’m so worried. He is under a consultant for glue ear and if it’s not improved then he will have grommet surgery which could be the cause of some of the concerns but I’ve gone down a google rabbit hole and everything points to autism. - only started walking confidently 2 weeks ago and rarely he tries to walk on his tip toes. - when he is running he flaps his arms up and down. This has only started the last few days. - seems interested in his hands. - shakes his head at times but seems more often the last few days. - constantly has to have an item in his mouth. - no words other than dada, mama and wow. No gestures. Will hand lead and does seem to have a good understanding. For example if I get his shoes he will put his foot up, if I say “go to dada” he will run to his dad. - not a big eater, will eat bland food. This doesn’t seem to be texture related, he just seems fussy. - loves stacking toys and doesn’t really want to play with anything else. Other than this he is a very happy boy, eye contact is great and he responds to his name when he wants to or not engrossed in another activity which is more interesting. Just a worried FTM who just wants the best for her LO!

The speech delay could easily be because of his hearing problems. It sounds like a possibility, I would arrange to get his two year old check (if your in England) done asap, a couple of months early won't make difference. If is in childcare speak to his keyworker and ask them

Glue ear can be so annoying for toddlers balance when walking/ speaking and hearing. They would need to do treatment before assessing him with other delays as it can be related to this.

A lot of those things listed could be due to glue ear! I had to have grommets put in my ears and go to a speech therapist. My speech is completely fine now. If his balance was off he would be late to walk, the hand flapping could just be to help with balance or just for fun. Head shake and items in mouth could be attempts to clear his ears. If he's responding with eye contact and sharing joy. Then try not to worry and enjoy the moments.

A friend of mine’s child had the grommets surgery at 4.75 years, and it was a long agonising wait, after genuinely struggling for a really really long time, so I’d really start banging that drum early, if you think that may be necessary. I really recommend baby sign language. We’ve used a really rudimentary sign language with my daughter from maybe 6m, and it’s really helped. Overall I wouldn’t be concerned about the rest of your list, but I hope you find some peace + support soon x
