Still not talking

My child says nothing besides dada and sometimes mama when he’s crying. He makes a variety of sounds, and follows many commands. He understands a lot! Can point to his eyes, hair, ears, nose mouth head knees toes etc… he knows the kitchen trash bath time bed time outside and more commands. But will not say anything. He mimics SOME sounds. Hardly ever. If someone sneezes, he will mimic, if the dog barks, he will mimic, but he will not mimic OUR sounds. If I say can you say moo? He won’t try. Or up, or any small sound/ word. He won’t try to say it. He does know more and all done in sign language and uses it frequently. We are going to talk to the ped at his 2 year, but is anyone in the same boat?? I’m starting to have fears I will never get to have conversations with my baby!!

Please tell me it’s going to be okay… from an anxious mama

Have you had his hearing checked? My son ended up needing ear tubes, the ENT said it’s one of the worst blocked ears she’s seen in a baby so young and doesn’t know how he passed any section of his hearing test. He got them in August, his vocab picked up a little but then when he started speech about 2 months ago he’s been flourishing. He’s just started 3 word sentences all I want … but it’s a far deference from i only saying dada and signing more and all done

It’s going to be okay. It sounds like he’s comprehending more and more as time goes on and has sign language to communicate. While I’d definitely follow up with your pediatrician on his spoken language skills, I’m not seeing anything that sounds like you’ll never have a conversation. Also, I think speech development is part of the reason Miss Rachel was created - if you’re not doing screen time maybe take a look at some of her content and mimic it with your kiddo!

It's going to be ok! Don't wait for the 2 year appt though. Call the pediatrician or self refer to the state for an evaluation. Your LO might just need a little help and the US has amazing early intervention support, all for free! You son will definitely qualify and they come to your home for free! They'll also rule out any hearing issues.

My daughter is doing EXACTLY what yours is doing. Crazy how similar but we have been having a speech therapist come weekly. It’s been helping so much! Would 100% recommend looking into it. I’m not sure about where you are from but there are a lot of free ones that work for our state, a pediatrician could help set you up with someone.

@Jess this is so encouraging! Can you tell me how it’s been helping, what changes you’ve seen? I’m in Colorado. I would love to connect if you want to message me?

While not in the same boat, I would absolutely recommend a self referral for EI. My son used EI during his first year and they are absolute angels and gave my son the support he needed! Ms Rachel is great as well as playing children’s music as it’s great for repetition.

Sounds like he has strong receptive and weaker expressive language skills. That’s ok! He likely just needs speech therapy to bring out his expressive language a bit more. Everything will be ok momma!

Yes my daughter is the same and we are in speech therapy

My daughter is the same way and we have been in speech therapy for a couple months now. She was doing good at a year old and had about 5 words but then regressed. By 18 months she would only say “bye”. Like your little, she would point to her body parts, touch her head when I asked where a hat went, etc. Between speech therapy and having Ms. Rachael on our tv a lot… we have seen a big improvement. I’m convinced that my girl is just stubborn and I’m sure that when she starts talking it will be nonstop. You aren’t alone mama!

My daughter is the same .. she's been in speech since 18 months ... They didn't diagnose her with anything yet because she is still young but it has helped her improve some bit ... Speak to your child's pediatrician they should provide you with resources to help you and your child
