Supply dwindling

My twin boys are 10 weeks tomorrow. Have been fed on expressed breast milk since birth. They’re both taking around 100mls every 4 hours. My supply is dwindling, I need to express for 30-60mins to get the 200mls I need for each feed & have no ‘stock’, just enough for the next feed. I feel like I may need to start adding in a bottle or 2 a day of formula & I feel really sad about it! Can anyone advise what works best for them in regard to timing of the formula bottles? They better for last feed, first feed etc? Any tips on how to increase supply again? Thank you!

Hi mama, don't beat yourself, you are feeding TWO babies from your body. I have 5 1/2 twins, and I was supplementing with formula when they were that age because I just wasn't producing enough. I would say make it be the first and last feed of the day (it really doesn't matter, though. Also, pumping for 30-60 mins is not healthy. What I did was power pump session between 12 am to 6 am because that is when prolactin levels are the highest. Also, you can just do one pump session during those that times. I choose around 3 or 4 am. (depending on when last I had pumped for the night), and that is when I would get enough for 2 feeds. For context at that age, my babies were eating 60-80 ml a feed.

Thank you so much. I’m so proud that I’ve managed so far but sad that I can’t produce enough for them. I generally pump every time I feed them, so every 4hours or so for around 30mins but if I’ve not produced enough for the next feed I’ve been staying on it longer.

@Nicola, my lactation consultant, said pumping should be between 15-20 mins max.

@Shieka how often do you pump? How long apart?

You are incredible I just want to say a massive well done, I wasn’t successful feeding my twins, you’ve done absolutely amazing!

@Nicola I used to pump every 3-4 hours for 15-20 mins. But after seeing a lactation consultant, I became more confident, and I switched to exclusively breastfeed. My milk supply actually increased more when I started to breastfeed.
