Not much milk

Hi ladies. I had a very traumatic birth and lost a lot of blood and also ended up going under general aesthetic. But it bought me my beautiful boy so I’m greatful. It left me with a slow to arrive milk supply and now my milk is here I’m not producing much. I’ve had to resort to introducing some top up formula as he was starving and very distressed. He also lost 14% body weight so we ended up back in hospital. 😢 I really want to breast feed and am trying everything. He’s pretty much on my boob all day and my midwife said keep at it my milk will come. But when I express very little comes out which is so disheartening. He is now 9 days old and I’m Wondering how long it can take to build up a better supply or is it unlikely to change after 9 days? X

Keep going, you will get there. Expressing/pumping doesn’t replicate the amount your baby will be getting. Babies are much more efficient. Has baby been checked for tongue tie?

This popped up on my feed but I had my babies in December 😊 please don’t feel disheartened. Your midwife is right, just keep at it. Your pump output is not an indication of how much you are producing, babies are much more efficient at getting milk out than a pump. Also, what pump are you using? Not all pumps are the same. My little girl lost 13% of her body weight and my little boy lost 11%. They are now happy, healthy almost 4 month olds!

Lots and lots of skin to skin, plenty of fluids and try to do anything that makes you feel relaxed and safe. Xx

Try and have differences between night and day too, you tend to produce more milk at night (with the dark) so keep lights to a minimum- its something to do with hormones. I havent breastfed yet but I have seem posts on here from women with similar experiences who ended up breastfeeding for months / years afterwards x

Lots of cuddles - releases oxytocin for milk production! 🤍✨ Ask for support - you might have access to an infant feeding specialist (not HV, or midwife) someone who is trained in BF. Sometimes the babies latch mig be slightly off. You need the support now, not next week. If you can’t get it locally on NHS I would HIGHLY recommend paying for a private lactation consultant. 🤍✨ You absolutely can do this! Can send me a message if you want to chat more! ♥️ Xxxx

I've seen a feeding specialist this morning as we've been struggling with weight gain nearly 2 and a half weeks in. She said to express every 2-3 hours, if I can after a feed, and even if I don't get much, it's still signalling my body to produce more milk so it will come eventually. Our issue is I've found out today baby has tongue tie when all along I was thinking it was a lack of supply from me x

Google your local NCT support they might be able to visit you at home 🫶🏻
