CMPA or usual formula side effects ?

Hi all Looking for some advice. My LO is now 3 months old and we have been on a feeding journey from the start. He was EBF for the first 7 weeks, I then had to combi feed and eventually we went to strictly formula feeding around 4 weeks ago. I did wonder when I was BF if he had an allergy to milk given he was so upset, gassy, sick (not a lot tbf) and screaming every evening. He has been semi ok since on formula, a lot happier in the evenings but we he’s been constipated since, really smelly farts, still coughs and sneezes and recently been back to being upset. Dr said to prescribe us milk to rule out CMPA but I’m just so reluctant to try incase these are also just normal symptoms to babys digestive system. So basically, has your LO had very low symptoms of CMPA and improved on this milk ? I feel like when ever I research CMPA it’s about rashes, baby being so sick after bottles, bad skin etc but all he has had constipation, smelly farts and unsettled.

We were in a different situation (very severe symptoms and have had to continue breastfeeding) but what you've described to me sounds like cmpa symptoms rather than just normal digestive system. I'd definitely give the prescription formula a go. The NICE guidelines for cmpa diagnosis states they don't have to have every symptom so don't let the fact he's only got a few symptoms sway you away from a potential diagnosis.

And just to add, it may well not be cmpa, but the only way you'll know for sure is if you try the prescription formulas.

@Rebecca thank you ! We have been on such a journey the last 12 weeks I’m just so scared to make him worse or even more unsettled xx

I could’ve written this! I haven’t gone to the drs about it as of yet and they think it’s reflux atm, so trialling gaviscon (which isn’t working). But my little boy have only got low symptoms too, along with mucusy poo (only poos once a day) so I don’t know whether to just ride it out either. He’s not completely inconsolable either, just a little unsettled here and there. Be interesting to see what other people have done.

My little one had low symptoms, basically bloating, gas, pain / discomfort, foul smelling poo which did turn mucasy. We did the milk challenge and she fail at 2 scoops in 1 bottle. She’s now 11 months and we are about to move to step 2 of the milk ladder. I saw a big difference when we switched to allergy formula. We also used gripe water which was so helpful especially with her gas. If you trial the formula just know you may not see a difference straight away and there are different formulas so one might not work but another might. I think it sounds like CMPA but not way of knowing for sure untill you trial it x

@Kate 🤞🏼🌈 I totally understand! I got to the point I was so scared to make any changes because everything seemed to either make him worse or cause more problems with something else! If it does make him worse though you can always change back. And there are different prescription formulas to try as well xx

@Sarah I feel the same. But equally don’t just want to go “oh well he’s just one of those babies that is just fussy” I’ll let you know how we get on xx

@Leanne thank you for sharing. What’s a milk challenge? I just told my dr how he has been since birth and she said to try this milk she has prescribed. Just all trial and error isn’t jt but I just want him to be happy xx

My little boy had mucus in his poo, rash, vomiting most feeds... we are now on neocate/gaviscon and he is thriving!! we are starting our milk challenge tomorrow so tomorrow might be totally different x

@Molly oh so glad it’s got better. Good luck tomorrow xx
