Spinal anaesthesia for C section

Ladies just wanted to know how is the spinal anaesthesia feels like during C section, is it a lot painful and does it also cause back pains afterwards. And what about when the catheter is inserted is it painful too?

Catheter you can't feel as it's done after the spinal. For me, i find the spinal is the worst part of the whole process. I've had 3 but never had any long lasting issues from it.

@Kirsty omg šŸ˜ itā€™s scary then

I honestly didnā€™t feel much I felt a tiny pin prick where they was numbing the area and Iā€™m petrified of needles so was thinking the worst after that felt nothing I even forgot about it until a few days after when I felt the plaster on my back and your numb when they insert the catheter so you donā€™t feel it at all and when they take it out itā€™s just a short sting and like you have to wee with a uti thatā€™s it then itā€™s over I was so worried but no need to be the cannula was th most uncomfortable but they numb your hand before they do it so tiny pin prick then just uncomfortable no pain hope this helps

The catheter was absolutely nothing didnā€™t notice it at all, but with the spinal when they had to dig their knuckles in my spine to find the spot hurt more than anything, Iā€™ve had on and off itching in that area, Itā€™s different from person to person though my sister had 2 sections and she gets pain quite often, itā€™s completely personal x

@Kirsty I had loads I think seven and one was inserted wrong caused me pain but short lived just sharp shooting pain down one side of body, after that I felt fine I was going to pass out when they pulled my stomach open, although no pain a weird quesy sensation. Catheter no pain nothing, removal wasn't the best blood sprayed everywhere but again no pain. The first poo after is rough and I wish I took poo softeners please get some lacsatives or whatever they offer they didn't actually offer me anything. Heaping wise I puled myself abit hard jn the beginning constantly carrying baby round and walking up and down top landing and bedroom and bathroom, didn't sleep for ten days. Finally went to my mums for Christmas and I slept abit better there. Overall it wasn't too bad

In all honesty I felt absolutely nothing. I was very much in labour when I went to have an unplanned section so I guess my mind wasnā€™t focused on that, but I had the sharp scratch for the local anaesthetic and there after felt nothing of the spinal.. within seconds they was laying me down and doing their checks to ensure I was numb.. catheter I didnā€™t feel either, I just felt pressure like someone was prodding around šŸ˜‚ but nothing painful what so ever - even when they removed it I wasnā€™t numb anymore and I still didnā€™t feel it x

I seem to require more anesthetic than the average woman my size (not entirely sure why, apparently it's a redhead thing?) but i have had issues before where people start something i should be numb for and i can feel a lot of pain (like dental work) My most recent, i got really unlucky, i didn't have enough local anesthetic before they attempted the spinal, and as she tried, she hit a nerve, and holy cow it hurt. she had to start again after giving more local to my back. Honestly, in the 3 that i have had, 100% the spinal is the worst bit of the entire process for me. But as you can see, it's not the case for everyone.

Itā€™s not painful they use a small numbing injection first before the spinal it felt like a little bee sting the numbing injection! Wasnā€™t painful at all. The catheter you couldnā€™t feel as your numb and also hardly felt it when they took it out 6 hrs later Iā€™m 15 weeks pp and had no back pain. I had a failed induction of 48hrs of back to back contractions so maybe this is why nothing hurt as much as them contractions šŸ˜…

I also donā€™t remember feeling anything and itā€™s only 4 months ago that I had my c-section. I was so pumped with adrenaline that I never really registered the spinal going in. I just remember the kind nurse who helps you to relax and breathe. It was done very quick as well so donā€™t worry about it! I never had back pain afterwards. Catheter is done when you already donā€™t feel anything anymore. Taking it out is a weird sensation but not painful! Good luck, you will be fine! šŸ’™

Didnā€™t feel it either type, the cannula in my hand was the worst bit and itā€™s just a sharp scratch. The catheter goes in when numb and doesnā€™t hurt at all, even when coming out. Never had any issues after both surgeries from the spinal.

Didnā€™t feel a thing. I did have a bit of back ache after but that couldā€™ve been the hospital bed šŸ˜‚. I used bio freeze on my back. So glad I had that! Wishing you the best ā¤ļø

I have mild scoliosis so it took them MANY attempts to get the spinal in the right place, when they hit somewhere they shouldn't it feels like shooting pains down one side of your body. But after a failed induction and 15 hours of back labour I didn't care anymore and the relief when they finally got it in the right place was incredible. I hate needles aswell but I think unless you have a curved spine it'll be okay. I'm prone to back pain and haven't experienced any yet at 4 weeks pp. Never noticed the catheter at all, first pee was a bit strange and I second what another lady has said here look into laxatives or stool softeners because my goodness šŸ˜…

I had to have both the spinal injection and an epidural as I have anaesthetic resistance, but I was more worried about the catheter being removed šŸ˜‚ It was all fine in the end, not painful, and had full sensation and went for a shower 3hrs later, so it was a good job I had both šŸ˜…

I had an emergency C section and couldnā€™t stop dramatically crying from the moment ā€œwe need to do a C section right nowā€ I couldnā€™t even stop crying when I was signing the form (I covered the paper with tears šŸ¤£) I didnā€™t feel the needle AT ALL šŸ©µ youā€™ll do amazing ! I was so scared but if thereā€™s ANYTHING Iā€™d tell to another woman itā€™s that itā€™s not as scary as we tell ourselves itā€™s going to be. I know itā€™s hard but try not to worry about it too much. The more you worry and overthink it the more scared and tense your body will be šŸ©· the doctors and midwives do it all day everyday. They know what theyā€™re doing just trust them . Sending you a big hug .

I didnā€™t feel anything, as they used numbing spray before. Iā€™ve had no backaches etc (Iā€™ve also had two sections). As others have said, the catheter is done shortly after the section and you wonā€™t feel this.

I mean I'd been relaxing stuffing my face in morrisons just before it happened, I was relaxing and drinking lots of tea and eating cakes, what a shock šŸ˜…

for spinal and canula only 1 sharp scratch thats it. catheter goes in after numbing, you dont feel going in. also when they take it out 6-8 h later it is not painful

They give you local anaesthetic before they put the spinal in so you shouldn't feel it, I didn't feel anything when they did the spinal. I have had two spinals and never had any side effects or back problems after either. However I do have sickness for the next 24hrs after which could be the spinal or other meds given in theatre that don't agree with me. Then catheter is done after so can't feel that either, and in my experience it's fine having it removed. For me the only painful part of the procedure was having the cannula in as that is done without any anaesthetic and I have very small veins in my hand. They ended up having to put it in my arm which was nowhere near as painful to do.

Agreed with what others have said- thought it was going to be painful but don't remember feeling anything or if I did it was very mild. I remember being able to get in a good position/ bending over as best you can helps.

Being honest, I am a person who is terrified of needles and honestly it wasnā€™t as bad as I thought it would be. They first give a needle for local freezing and that just feels like a pinch, then they give the spinal and the spinal just had a lot of pressure and almost like a dull ache. After all the freezing is done, that is when they put the catheter in. In all honesty the hand IV (cannula) hurt the most out of everything

Canā€™t feel the catheter as youā€™ll be numb, and I donā€™t remember feeling the spinal if Iā€™m honest. They numb the area first as that was like a scratch, didnā€™t feel any pain and i actually got in trouble due to laughing because it tickled šŸ¤£

Canā€™t take the pain. Itā€™s not worth it to get shot because of the future mess your back up.

@Michelle just you try having a C-section without one šŸ˜‚

Sorry if I had regular delivery

I did have emergency c section

I was dreading the spinal but it was probably the least worst bit! They give you a local anaesthetic first which does sting a bit but is bearable and really quick, then for the actual spinal I just felt a bit of pressure. Catheter was done after the spinal so didnā€™t feel a thing.
