Toddler still not speaking

My little one still hasn’t started saying simple words yet, she just about says mama and perhaps the word for food and water in my language, hi, bye, no and car. I’m starting to get really concerned because I see other children her age that are saying upwards of 200 words and even forming small sentences. I try to talk to her and say each object/items name as I give it to her or show her but she doesn’t repeat or even attempt to say it. She just stares blankly and then looks away. I tried to do the flash cards at home but she just isn’t interested. She is still taking a dummy at times to soothe herself however I keep it strictly for bed times.

Have you spoken to anyone about it? What did they say at her 2 year review? They may be able to help with next steps.

When you say “my language “ is she around multiple languages ?

@Elsa at her 2 year review they said that it’s normal and that some children are just late bloomers when it comes to speaking, which I do understand however it wasn’t very helpful because she is still only using the same 5/6 odd words till now x

@Gilly we speak English and Persian, mainly Persian at home x

I’m sure I’ve read somewhere that children in bi/tri lingual households are usually slightly behind in language development. However, I also read that once they do start speaking , they generally formulate better sentences. 🤷‍♀️

@Gilly I appreciate that ❤️ I’ve heard that before too and it does bring some form of ease, I just want to make sure she’s not too far behind on hitting her milestones! x

My son isn’t speaking yet either- also a bilingual household. However- we have been referred for speech therapy

My LO was late to talk but we saw a huge improvement after he stopped using the dummy completely. We also found he was slow starting and hard to understand but gradually he got clearer and started using more words, at that point progress sped up but I guess it's more rewarding for them when they are understood and maybe more incentive to speak when they get what they want from using their words. Just to say though my nephew didn't speak until he was 4, went to all kinds of specialists and refused to speak still and then just came out with whole sentences straight away, he wasn't as clear as he hadn't practiced as much as the other kids his age. He lives in a bi-lingual household. I think if you are worried, reach out to the health visitor again but if your LO is understanding language and responsive I wouldn't be too concerned

@Natalie Thank you for your comment, made me feel a little better ❤️ glad that your little one and your nephew have started speaking and are doing well. It’s funny because she genuinely understands me when i tell her to do something for example sitting somewhere or holding my hand or putting things in the bin, she genuinely understands most of what I say to her it’s just getting her to say it, and because she can’t say anything I sometimes struggle to understand what’s wrong and then she gets frustrated because she can’t communicate with me bless her, makes me feel awful honestly x
