@Shannon I’m working the front desk job. I don’t have any support system except some friends but they are in other states. I’m always in the lookout for other jobs but I’m very limited due to me not being a citizen. Because citizens usually get a priority at getting hired I’m with no special skills. I love photography, fashion, I already do something with fashion which I resell clothes online on Poshmark. But I don’t know how to make it in the way that it will be enough for us
@Elle it’s a little tricky for me because someone has to watch my son if I want to keep the job and go to college. If I want to study online then a college has to provide the scholarship for me otherwise there’s no way I can afford college at this point of my life
It’s illegal for employers to discriminate based on citizenship or immigration status. https://www.uscis.gov/i-9-central/employee-rights-and-resources/preventing-discrimination#:~:text=Federal%20law%20prohibits%20employers%20from,%2C%20disability%2C%20or%20genetic%20information.
Everyone has skills and something they are good at. Sometimes we just need to stop to think about it, write them down, say them out loud… Based on what you’ve shared, here are a few things I can think of: Job Search: Work on creating a resume if you don’t already have one. Apply to jobs and customize your applications to each job detail that you apply to increase your chances of recruitment selection. Don’t get discouraged. Current employer: Have a conversation with your supervisor about development opportunities and assistance creating a plan to help with your growth and development. See if they offer any education incentives, training opportunities etc. Ask if there are additional projects or responsibilities you can take on to build your skill set.
Education: There are many free options in L.A. County. The L.A. County Public Library system is full of resources including Online Learning, tools for job seekers, citizenship, laptop rentals, museum and state park passes etc. https://lacountylibrary.org Non citizen can mean different things. I don’t know your status, but pending eligibility, you may have access to free community college tuition. To check your eligibility, look into California College Promise, CA Dream Act and AB540. https://lacollegepromise.org/about.html
For a side hustle: With front desk skills, maybe something like a virtual assistant role would be a lateral option for you. You can look into shopping thrift stores, garage/yard/estate sales to expand your buy/sell venture on Poshmark and other platforms. I knew someone that would shop garage sales and then flip them at their own every couple of months. If you are already good at photography, create a portfolio and promote/sell your services. If you need to develop or refine the skill, look into classes at a community college. Food Security: also look into food pantry programs and food banks.
Best of luck to you. I hope something I’ve shared is helpful. 🫂
