Baby waking up at 5am

Hello mommas! My 5 month old baby has been waking up at 5am for 2 weeks now. He goes to bed around 6-7pm. Yesterday I tried letting him sleep later like 7:45, and still he woke up at 5am. He still takes 3 naps and takes 2hr every wake window. 1st nap usually lasts 1.5hrs, 2nd nap 1hr, 3rd nap 30-45 mins. I’m worried cos he only gets 10 hours of night sleep. How ro correct this? Is there something I’m doing wrong here?

I could have wrote this myself. This is pretty much exactly our schedule except bed is between 7-8 and he wakes up at 6, the odd time 7… honestly, I don’t think you’re doing anything wrong. Is your baby happy? Is your baby growing? .. I just remind myself that overall, he is meeting his sleep needs every day (roughly 13-14 hours total) which is what our doctor has recommended!

This is normal

Sounds normal. If you add 10 hours of overnight sleep plus 3 hours of naps, thats 13 hours and within the recommended range of sleep for this age.

Mine same … many wakes up at 1 am and then at 5 am then sleeps for one hour or two and that’s it he is awake …I am not sure why this times ….my baby is 8 months in one week

How old is he? Sometimes if they start waking earlier then it's a sign that they might be ready to drop a nap

@Hazel he is only 5 months old. I am not sure if we are ready to drop the nap. Coz he can only stay awake withour getting fussy for 2 hours and only naps 1.5 hours max

Sometimes babies are naturally early wakers unfortunately. It should even out as they start dropping naps. What I found helped with early mornings is setting an appropriate time to wake up (like 6 am, we then pushed it back to 7), and treat any waking before that as a night waking. No activity, no getting up, just soft rocking, singing, etc, feed or diaper, but no playtime. Even if it's only 30 minutes before 6 am. We set our circadian rhythm based on light exposure and activity in the morning, so if you are consistently getting up with baby when they wake at 5, they are going to keep doing it. Treating it like a night waking keeps the night vibe going so it feels no different from a 12 am waking.

@Melissa hi! Thanks for sharing! What should I do then when he wakes up at 5am? Do I just pick him up and feed him and put to bed right after? If he doesn’t fall asleep and cry? Do I consider that as a morning waking and put him to sleep after 2 hours?

What I used to do was the same thing as a night time wake - sit with her and rock slowly. He may not be into it but then you can just put him down, leave the room. If he cries, pick up up again, sit and rock or stand and walk or bounce or whatever you would normally do to shush him. It's the shushing activity that makes it feel like nighttime - no talking in normal voices, no lights, no toys, just soft whispers and maybe some singing.
