Unless you are in a taxi legally the baby needs to be in the car seat. I believe it’s a fine of £500 and points on your licence. If your baby is uncomfortable stop the car somewhere safe. A simple google will tell you what car seat your baby needs to be in for their age and weight. My daughter legally doesn’t need to be in a car seat anymore but she is a tall 8 year old.

Baby legally MUST be in a car seat at all times whilst the vehicle is in motion. Not only is it law, it is incredibly unsafe for baby to be on your lap in a moving vehicle.

Baby should absolutely NOT be held during car journeys. Car seat and rear facing. Sit it the back with them if you need 😊 x

You absolutely need a car seat for baby to be strapped into at all times! Just make sure you factor in regular breaks, take baby out, have a walk round etc.

Depending on babies age you’ll need to take regular breaks to get them out the car seat but as others have said it’s absolutely illegal to not have them in a car seat whilst driving (plus very unsafe) xx

Absolutely illegal to hold a child in a moving car. No offence but I’d rather my child be uncomfortable than dead in a crash. They’ll be fine, depending on age as well just stop often or wait until child is older before attempting a long road trip. My son is 7m and I’d not go anywhere further than 1 hour away because I don’t want him unsettled while I’m driving.

without trying to scare you, although it’s totally a valid point, you’ll be putting their life at risk by not using a car seat.

Holding a baby in a moving vehicle is a very dangerous and irresponsible thing to do.

Most taxis now require a car seat to be used also. Busses and trains are the only places I’ve ever heard that don’t require although most times they prefer for baby to be in a pram with brakes on from what I heard xx

Unless in a taxi or in an emergency situation e.g. you need to rush to hospital and the person taking you doesn't have a suitable car seat it is a legal requirement for your child to be in an age appropriate car seat.

In addition to what everyone else has said, depending on age of baby and type of car seat there’s a limit to how long they can be in it, so maybe break down your long road trip into smaller sections allowing lots of time for stops

Not only illegal but completely dangerous and irresponsible. Keep baby in a rear facing car seat and stop for breaks.

I mean, you can stop and check on your baby if he is upset, but car seat is a must in a lot of countries. Where are you from if I may? Curious to understand why you are asking that, isn't it illegal to just hold your baby in a car in your home country?

The fact you’re even considering no car seat is highly concerning 🥴🥴

A long road trip with a baby will require multiple stops , so be sure to add them into your plans. Baby will need a car seat. It is illegal for the car to be moving and a baby not safely strapped into a car seat. The baby will have to be taken out of the car seat after so long in the seat ( check manufacturer guidelines ). It’s also just so much safer than being held by you. In a crash your baby could end up anywhere inside or even outside the car. You wouldn’t not wear a seatbelt as a fully grown adult….. why would you risk a baby without one?
