Anatomy Ultrasound

Hey mamas! I went in for my second ultrasound for my anatomy scan. The first one they weren’t able to get all the measurements and this time they said they still couldn’t get “optimal views” of certain measurements. They referred me to go to an MFM to get the last measurements they need. I was curious if anyone else got referred to them after the second try or if you keep going back to the OB you usually go to?

MFM has the same ultrasound machines and techs, so they might be passing the buck on a difficult exam 😅 or it’s their protocol to outsource to a more experienced team. Which measurement can’t they get, if you don’t mind me asking?

I just went for my 20 week ultrasound today and they referred me to do a second one at another location as well for a second opinion.

That’s what I was curious on too. This actually happened with my first baby and they made me go to MFM again (same OB) and it wasn’t covered on insurance and costed a lot more since it was considered a speciality place. They didn’t get measurements in the face like nose bone and then she claims they couldn’t see the picture of the heart and kidneys fully even though she showed us the 4 chambers of the heart and both kidneys and the blood flow to all of it. So I’m confused why I would need to go to an MFM just for certain small measurements.

That’s so bizarre!

@Lauren they might not have been able to get LVOT/RVOT of heart. 4 chamber is just one of several pictures they need and the others are harder to get, unfortunately. If you want, you can likely request to be seen at OB office again instead of MFM.

@AmyB that could be it too. I thought they were able to get the LVOT and RVOT on my last one though so I would have assumed combined they got all they needed. They had a clear view of the heart for a long time where she was checking out everything but it just maybe wasn’t in the right spots for the view. I might try to request another one there. They said they don’t do more than 2 and have to refer me out but I was trying to avoid paying hundreds of dollars to go to that one lol. I might try and ask to see a different location instead.

they have better doctors and ultrasound in my opinion 🫣 go tbh

Weird. Anytime the baby wouldn't change positions/ couldn't get a view they'd just have me jump around and jiggle him til they could.

@Tiffany that’s why I thought it was kind of weird. I have heard of many people trying to go on their side or wiggle baby around to get them to turn over and I didn’t have that. I was going to try and do it on my own but I didn’t want to mess up her views and then she just abruptly ended it and said I needed to go to MFM to get the rest they need. It seems kind of fishy to me since I won’t have it covered this time at a specialty place.

Maybe they saw something they wanted an specialist opinion on. The ultrasound techs can't tell you directly if there's anything out of the norm- a doctor or someone else has to. Like when I do EKGs I have to pretend I don't know how to read/interpret them because a doctor has to be the one to do that for the patient
