Metformin Hydrochloride for Insulin Resistance & Pregnancy

I just spoke my doctor who said to stop my Metformin Hydrochloride pills for my Insulin resistance as I have a positive pregnancy test. Before TTC I checked if those pills are compatible with pregnancy and they said yes and to call when I have a pregnancy test. Is it normal to stop the pills? Have I endangered the fetus between finding out and calling the doctors as I was taking the pills? Anyone else in a similar situation?

I was taking Metformin for PCOS to help ovulation, and was advised to carry on taking them at least until 12 weeks pregnant as to help reduce the chance of miscarriage. So I do understand it’s fine however I don’t take them for insulin resistance so not sure if that’s different

I was taking metformin for insulin resistance and came off them at 20 weeks. They said I could carry on if I wanted to, but would have to proceed as if I had gestational diabetes ie regular sugar checks and possible treatment. As far as I know they pose no danger to baby, but they can’t monitor you for GD as well if you’re on them as they faff with the results, which makes sense.

@Claudia Thank you! I guess every doctor treats you differently.

@Donna Thank you! I guess every doctor treats you differently. I was just confused as I know it's fine to take it while pregnant but then they said stop it.

Metformin is pregnancy safe, but can mess witht he gestational diabetes tests, so almost every dr will have you stip at some point before your 20 week appointment. The protocol seems to be lacking, so it honestly just feels like it is an individual dr's perogative as to when.

I have insulin resistance and pcos but didn't take Metformin before pregnancy (I was on Victoza - Liraglutide, which my doctor told me I had to stop during pregnancy). However, during week 27 they told me I had gestational diabetes and was prescribed Metformin by week 30. So, Metformin should not risk the baby since they commonly prescribe it when having GDM
