Does your one year old respond well to being told no?

Hi, I have a 16 month old boy and he sometimes doesn’t listen to me. I’d describe my parenting style as being pretty relaxed and I rarely tell him no unless it’s unsafe for him or inconveniencing others however when I do tell him no he doesn’t listen. For example earlier on today he was putting his toddler snacks between the sofa cushions (they’re the type that can melt so it would cause a big mess) and I told him to stop and he didn’t even look over at me. I eventually walked over to him and tried to move him away and redirect his attention but he started crying and went to go back to the sofa with the snacks in his hand and tried to do it again. So when I pulled him away and took the snacks out of his hands after telling him no again he cried and stomped his feet and had a mini tantrum. He usually does that for 2-3 minutes and then goes back to normal but he does this everytime he’s told no. Is that normal? Should I be doing something different?

Completely normal behaviour for a toddler

But it’s also been said before that toddlers don’t really respond well to the words “No” and “don’t”. I don’t know much about gentle parenting yet but i’m trying with my toddler to say phrases such as “feet on the floor” instead of “no don’t climb on that” for example as apparently they respond better to direction rather then a telling off. Not working out just yet though🤣

@Hannah I’ll have to give that a try thanks for the advice x
