I wouldn’t before birth, however as Nancy said you’ll want something with you that you don’t need to remove before feeding and apply it every time, even if you don’t think you need it for the first week or so
Agreed ^^ Definitely recommend expressing some milk and rubbing it into your nipple after each feed and letting it air dry a bit, really helps to heal. And if you do experience any cracks use the medela hydragel pads! LIFE SAVERS!
I personally never had any issues regarding cracked nipples and I breastfed for 2.5 years. I never used any butter or creams.
In general breastfeeding gets better and easier by itself. I recommend silver nipples shields to wear when you’re not breastfeeding as it lets your nipples not to rub against clothes as they might be sore in first two weeks. I used lanolin cream in first week as well.
I’ve had to start using nipple balm early at week 26 because mine were cracking. Midwife said that’s totally normal and we can use it at any point.
My midwife gave me the advice to just moisten your nips with a little bit of breast milk after each feed 😂 I’m to tired to word that any differently
I've not heard of preparing nipples before giving birth. What worked for me at the start of my breastfeeding journey was using a safe cream/butter that does not need wiping off before feeding. I used the cream before and after every feed for the first few weeks to a month. I am now 6 months PP still breastfeeding and I have not had any issues with cracked nipples. Getting a good latch will also help to ease discomfort
