Catheter

Do you have to have a catheter after a c section or can you refuse as I am anxious about having one and the pain of them taking it out?

You do have to have 1 in it’s abit uncomfortable but it doesn’t hurt to be taken out x

the catheter gets put in as your lay down in theatre and you can’t feel anything and barely feel it being taken out. Won’t you end up weeing everywhere without it?

You will have one as you will have no control over your bladder as you won’t have any feeling.. I had a catheter and im a nurse and have put them in/ taken many out too, there shouldn’t be any pain, when its inserted you will be numb from the spinal and when its taken out they just deflate the balloon that holds it in place and slide it out, it will just feel like you’re going for a wee x

You have to have it as otherwise you will just pee everywhere. They put it in once you’re completely numb and take it out once you can walk again. It doesn’t hurt to have it out just feels weird. I dread to think the mess I’d have made as I got numbed around 9am and got my feeling back around 5pm 😅 x

Your bladder has to be constantly emptied for the c-section. You can't feel it going in as you're numb. And taking it out isn't painful. I couldn't pee after my c-section and had to have the catheter back in. It didn't hurt putting it back in and taking it out again. If you breathe and relax, you'll be fine. It's a need, not a want.

It honestly doesn’t hurt getting it taken out xx

Getting it taken out takes about 2 seconds its just abit uncomfortable but it isnt painful. You wont feel it go in as they do it after you're numb 🙂

You wont feel it go in as youll be numb i was worried about it coming out but didnt feel a thing youll be fine x

I had to have my catheter put back in as I couldn’t pass urine without it for first 36 hours. Even then it didn’t hurt getting it put back in or removed, something I was really worried about before hand. It literally feels like having a wee, it doesn’t hurt at all

You have to have it.

I honestly couldn’t feel the catheter at all going in or out it’s fine

I did not feel it go in and when it was time to take it out again it was honestly a very minor uncomfortable feeling - no pain at all!

I’ve had it twice and it’s painless. You have to have one as you are basically incontinent due to the anaesthesia and have no bladder control. You cannot be sat in wet and soiled bedding after surgery. They put it in when numb and it comes out when you get up to walk. Feels like pushing a pee out for 5 secs, zero pain.

Mine didn't hurt when it came out . Just breath in and it was out. Xxxx

Honestly I was so worried about the catheter but it was absolutely fine, no pain at all! It made it so much easier because peeing on the loo is a hard position to get in and out of!!

@Melissa I had this too!

they make you get up from the bed to take the catheter out and walk to the toilet about 6-8 hours after the surgery, and tbh it hurts so much to get up for the 1st time that you won't notice the catheter being taken out at all. And when it's being put in the anaesthesia already should have kicked in, so you won't feel it at all.

@Alla yeah I agree - actually going to sit on the loo made me want the catheter back 😂 it was so easy

I had no pain taking it out xx

Genuinely least of your worries in the very nicest way - you need to get it- you’ll be thankful for it the first few hours after when you can’t stand up and you won’t fell if you’re peeing yourself
