Transitioning out of swaddles

Baby just rolled today (yay!) but has been showing signs the last week! I didn't know you had to start transitioning once they started showing signs 🤦🏼‍♀️ Well now we're going to probably go cold turkey tomorrow. I'm worried because he has been sleeping through the night the past 2 weeks so this will be a setback for sure. We currently use arms up swaddle and can unzip the little cuffs. Also have a swaddle that is 3/4 length arms and you can undo the mittens. I bought a sleeveless sleepsack and a halo arms free swaddle in anticipation for this day. Tips from people that already made the jump? I know it'll be a rough transition with him but anything to make it easier? 😅

Wow, so impressive that your baby is already rolling! We are not there yet. Can I ask what brand swaddles (arms up and 3/4 length) you were using?

If you use the hands up one I highly recommend the zippadee zip swaddle/sleep sack. This worked well for our daughter and you can literally use it until they grow out of them my daughter used hers until she was like 2.5

Anytime we uncuff the mittens he wakes up. Dreading this transition... 😭

You could do one arm out at a time (switching every wake up), but should probably go cold turkey. It'll be hard couple days, but your kid could surprise you too! My 10 week old just got out in 3 days (I was done trying to swaddle her).

Baby Merlin's Magic Sleepsuit!!!

You might be surprised how easily he switches. My little guy spit up all over his sleep sack one night and I had to do a no swaddle sleep sack and he sleep great. We basically dropped it from there. I did use the Love to Dream sleep bag with upright arms for about a week before this then I zipped off the arms. But basically he just did it. Of course he still wakes up to feed etc but dropping the swaddle hasn’t seemed to be a big issue. Good luck!

We used love to dream swaddles and just swapped to a sleep sack a couple days ago and it was pretty easy! I think that transition is prob the easiest 😅 I suggest trying it at nap and then at night! I was worried bc mine has been sleeping all night, but it’s been pretty good the last couple nights. However, she’s been restless at 3:30am the past couple days, but I think it’s just a fluke thing 😅 But we have the target sleepers with hand cuffs that we fold over so her hands don’t get cold! And so she chewing on her hands, bc that hypes her up 😂😂

@Raeanna okay I've heard of these! They are safe to roll in?

@Kyla that's awesome! We've tried to transition before and it didn't go well. I'm trying a nap now and he woke himself up from his arms 😅

@Chandra that's so awesome! He LOVES his swaddles. I wish we had tried earlier.

@Jen he sweat his butt off in those 😂 plus I heard they aren't safe when they can roll.

@Brooklyn wow that's great! My son is finally sleeping through the night so I hope it stays this way. He likes arm up but not free 😅

@Lauren that's hilarious chewing her hands hypes her up! I was hoping it'd soothe him too because he is a big paci guy. I have to replace it a lot at night. I was hoping arms free would allow him to self soothe. Ugh this is so tough! Currently contact napping because he woke up himself up arms free and wouldn't go back down.

@Lauren hilarious! When I first put him down he was arms up still too 😂 His swinging arms woke him up though. So contact napping it is.

I hired a sleep training service for the transition. It took 3 nights and he’s sleeping 7-7am

@Serene nice! I'm hoping 3 nights does the trick with the transition. He's already woken up 4 times in 1.5 hours 😭

@Serene I would pay big bucks for that service 😂😂

yay for rolling! that's such a big milestone! tbh, just take it one night at a time and maybe try to keep the bedtime routine super consistent, it might help him feel more secure. this is what the 'Heal Baby Care App' mentioned… hope it helps! "Congratulations on your baby's milestone! Transitioning from a swaddle can be challenging, but there are ways to make it smoother. Start by introducing the sleeveless sleepsack or the arms-free swaddle during naps to help him get used to the new feeling. You can also maintain a consistent bedtime routine to provide comfort and reassurance. It's normal for sleep patterns to change during this transition, so be patient with him. How has he been responding to the swaddle so far-does he seem comfortable, or does he show signs of wanting to move more?

@Susan He still has the newborn nighttime wiggles. It definitely is less but he swings his arms a lot 😂 Then it knocks out his paci and he isn't happy. He has been doing okay. Still sleeping through the night just needs paci popped back in every once in awhile.
