How many words are your babies saying at this point? My guy just turned 16 months yesterday and is only saying mama, dada, mom, hey and hi. He might be trying to say dog. According to my SLP friend he needs early intervention…by 18 months they should apparently have a vocabulary of 10-50 words. 😞 We’ve already had delays with feeding issues and now this, I’m really concerned.

Mine is 15 months and I've been wondering the same. His vocabulary is very selective and I'm wondering if he CAN say more but chooses not to? Mama Hi Ball Milk Both (he wants BOTH boobs when nursing lol) Llama (sounds like "muh" - llama llama is his favorite book right now) Hot Orange (sounds like "anch" or "uch") Andddd he tries for other things but not consistently and not enunciating enough to know for sure

It’s a good question! This article from Babycenter says at 15 months most children (75%) will have a vocabulary that consists of mama, dada, and 3 or more other words. https://www.babycenter.com/toddler/development/your-15-month-olds-language-and-cognitive-development-speaki_1213394 I’ve heard that hand signs and animal sounds also “count” towards the number of words they know - does he do any of those? If you’re concerned at all though, I’d definitely talk to someone! It could be a “wait and see” for a couple of months to see how much more he picks up. If you’re friends an SLP I imagine her recommendation is sound, but maybe get a second opinion! My LO (15 1/2 months) is higher on the vocabulary (while slower on the gross motor) so not a great one to compare with!

Also, what issues did he have with feeding? I imagine a lot of times feeding and speech issues are related since they both have to do with the mouth/throat!

My twins definitively say mama baba nana Adda,(trying to say my name), no or nah, they do the dadada when babbling too, they don’t say hi yet but they respond to hi by waving and smiling, and my oldest has a special word for when he is hungry (agun). They love the ABC song and my oldest will clap whenever someone finishes singing it, his brother will smile. But it must be on key! Lol. They actually laugh at you if it’s off key which I think is awesome. Some say children “should be” doing things at a certain pace but everyone is different in the ways they develop. Keep an eye on your little one of course, and ask a pediatrician if you notice no progress but let your little one shine too! We are all unique ❤️🙏🏽

By 16 months the average is 10-15 words. I would talk to your pediatrician about early intervention. It’s not a bad thing! Just think of it as kindergarten for speech!! It’s not uncommon for babies with feeding difficulties to also need speech.

100+ my baby is speaking 3 word sentences.

We’re onto 2-3 word sentences as well with probably around 50+ words. It really varies! But we read 6-8 books a day and he hears at least 10+ songs and nursery rhymes a day, especially with all the talking and singing at day care. I don’t think there’s a right or wrong for this age!! They’re all still just starting to talk!

I’m scared now. My baby turned 15months a week ago and he says aye mama, dada, no….i speak to him in Spanish and a lot of the words are hard to say since he hasn’t started in s words yet… should I concerned?

@Susan it could be worth mentioning that you have several older children, toddlers mimic what they see and hear and if your brood is 10x that of a first time mom, it's likely your little one has a lot more opportunities to hear spoken language ❤️

@Hannah i was simply answering her question.

I will let it go for now, my girl turned 16 m sometimes tell multiple things, sometimes 2-3 words,, toddler mind difficult to understand,,,

Our girl says maybe 20-30 (honestly not fully sure). A lot of her words are animal sounds. So we are able to ask her, “what does a horse say?” -“neigh neigh.” She can do this for at least 10 animals. She has also been learning foods. Just remember, every baby is different. Even if your little one isn’t saying things, doesn’t mean they don’t understand. It sounds like they are already doing really well. Keep encouraging your LO.

@Cassidy , just out of curiosity, what kind of sentences does your little one say? That’s so awesome. We think our LO is getting close, so want to know what phrases to look out for.

@Jen that’s so exciting!! Cole says things like: “Mommy and Daddy” “more please/more muffin please” “walk down hallway (loves when we sing our ‘let’s go walking down the hallway’ song lol)” “Read books please” “Go outside” “All done” “No thank you” “Mommy up please” Lots of politeness in this house 😂 I have him say please and thank you for almost everything. He also fills in the blank for a lot of the nursery rhymes and songs we listen to which has helped his vocabulary a TON! So I’ll go “Mary had a little ___” who’s fleece was white as ___” and he’ll fill in the blanks. Highly recommend!

Mine is 16m and doesn’t say anything

@Cassidy that is amazing. I guess in that case our girl is doing the same. She’ll eat “Dog dog go outside” “I go outside” “All done” “More please” “No no dog” (when they bark) And a few more. Love the politeness. It’s huge. She says please and thank you a lot. Such a fun stage. She also had her own language that she’s saying long sentences, so pretty sure when they become coherent, she’ll be non stop.

@Lori I’m asking the same thing. I speak to her in English but my husband and his family Spanish. She understands both languages but doesn’t say anything.
