Baby sometimes sleeps through the night and it’s causing me pain

My 10 week old has currently been asleep for the last 8.5 hours, which is lovely because we’d been having a bit of a regression lately. The only problem is that I have been up since 4am with hard af boobs, and have been terrified of getting a blocked duct (happened once before, worst time of my life). So now I’ve crept out of the bedroom and downstairs to pump as I didn’t want to wake the baby. I defo should have done this at 4am when I first woke up because I’d be long done by now (it’s now gone 5am), but here we are. Is there a better way to relief hard boobs than pumping for 10 minutes? I’m wondering if a haakaa or manual pump will work just to relieve some of the hardness so I can sleep without fear? I currently only have an electric hands free pump (and just the one, so it takes me twice as long!) hoping something less electric will be quiet too so I don’t feel like I have to leave the room

Your body should adjust soon, if you’re in pain only pump a little to get some relief don’t empty them. I can now manage overnight without feeding or having to pump but I’m ready to burst come 7am when he wakes. My body took a few days to adjust

I had the same problem and was loving the extra sleep but waking up so uncomfortable! I pumped for the first two nights and then I was worried I would have to do this all the time and not enjoy the sleep! I found that it did just regulate after a couple of days, I still wake up really full but it doesn’t wake me up if that makes sense.

Whenever my little girl started sleeping longer through the night and therefore causing my boobs to go hard I would just hand express some into a bottle or container (only about 30ml or so). Using a pump may give your body same signal as a feeding baby so you’ll continue to wake up with full boobs. Using the hand expression method has worked each time and supply regulated by next night so I was fine. Hope this helps 😊

Great, thank you! Looks like I’ll get a hand pump if this continues then…I only pumped for 15 mins in total but got 120ml 😮‍💨 im really just looking for something silent that will relieve the pressure but not empty me. I was also terrified that she’d wake up at 5am (as she likes to do) and then I’d have nothing for her to get her back to sleep. She ended up waking up at 6:30am but I couldn’t sleep until 5:30am after my pumping session 😂 She’s done long stretches before but then gone back to waking every 3 hours, so I don’t necessarily want to stop producing my overnight milk but yeah….complicated!

You could definitely take a manual pump to bed with you to relieve some pressure but only enough to take the edge off as your boob's will think that's a time to produce more milk which is the opposite of what you want. You can either go put the milk in the fridge or just leave it next to your bed and dump it the next day, or use it in a bath. The medela pump is a nice one

I use a haakaa for exactly this!! I don't like to fully empty my boobs in case my little one wakes soon after and is hungry, so find the haakaa is perfect for just taking the edge off! x

@Elly I’m too lazy to put the milk in the fridge 🤣 but a supply of bath milk might be a good idea. I really want to try milk in the bath but don’t want to waste my supply so this would be a great idea

@Lauren give it a go! It's so good for their skin! Or save it and make some breastmilk soap!

I use a medela manual pump and prefer it to my elvie. Much faster and more efficient. When this has happened to me i have had to get up and pump downstairs and popped it in the fridge, my thoughts being if she wakes up within an hour of me pumping then i have milk in the fridge to use. If she wakes 2hrs later my boobs will have been able to replenish!

Also breastmilk is fine at room temperature for up to 6hrs ✨
