HELP! Crying whilst feeding

My 5 week old shows hungry cues, will then feed for a couple of minutes before screaming. She will either then seem like she's trying to re latch but just headbutt me or cry whilst feeding. The result is always that she stops feeding when she doesn't seem full. I take regular burp breaks and she burps every time. Sometimes I will change her Nappy and then try again. The GP said potential reflux and prescribed medication which doesn't seem to have changed anything. She's gaining weight so everyone is dismissing me but her screams sound like she's in pain and/or starving and I just don't know what to do!

This sucks. It could reflux but tbh that’s wants pediatricians rely on as a response when they don’t know what’s going on. It could be so many things. Let start with the obvious, are you sure your breasts are producing enough milk to fulfill her needs?

My 7 week old is doing something similar but he's not a loud crier screamer. I get maybe 5 to 7 minutes at the breast before he starts getting upset. I've started using the haaka on the other side while he feed and give him a bottle after the breast which seems to be working for now. He's had reflux since week 1 so I know it's not that. Hope it resolves soon

I'm pretty sure they are. She is consistently gaining weight and we have a good number of wees and poos, I leak often to the point that I can collect my let down (around 10mls whilst she feeds on the other side). A lactation consultant also told me it seems like I have a good supply. I don't know how else you can tell though?

She also coughs and splutters often after initially latching

To me, it seems like clusterfeeding and the cries is just communication. At 5 weeks, feeding amps up and it’s not because your supply isn’t enough (especially from what you’re saying about weight!) it’s just ensuring there is supply and demand xx

This could be an indicator that you have a quick let down and just struggling to keep up. This post has some information with tips you can use to help this: https://www.instagram.com/p/DDALEaNtILi/?img_index=7&igsh=MXV6dWtkZXk2ZGthbw==

@Emily I've just read this now and honestly it made me tear up! It describes exactly what we're going through! Especially the screaming into the breast and 4am grunts!

She has posts like this which honestly describe every difficult breastfeeding milestone stone and they have helped me so so much as it perfectly describes each stage in every detail and are reassuring that it’s all normal. And also, reassuring that it will just be a phase as well! You’re doing an amazing job and you should be so proud of yourself xx

@Emily thank you so much! It's soul destroying to hear her scream especially when I know she's hungry but just won't latch!

I'd guess quick let down. The last lady I mentioned this to hand expressed or pumped before feeding and it helped massively. I know it's not ideal or easy to just do this when out and about etc. I also suggested leaning back during feeding or finding another position that slows the flow. That or either possible slow flow? It's so tricky and I guess you'd know if you see milk squirting quickly from your nipple or not during feeding. Hope something I've said helps xxx

@Beth thank you x

Nipple shields can help slow flow down too if that’s something you want to try! Good luck x
