C-section at Royal Derby Hospital?

I am having an elective c-section next Friday at RDH and would love to have some insights from any ladies that have had the same? I’m hoping the more prepared I can be in knowing what to expect it might help to ease the nerves!! How did the process go for you? What was the after care like? Any advice? Thanks 🫶

I had an emergency one and I have to say the staff were amazing and my cut opening was done really well (according to midwives). I had a difficult birth but the c-section was the best part 🙂you’ll be fine x

the actual emergency c section i had there went amazing however my after care wasn’t great but everything will be okay xx

My c section was absolutely fine, had a really lovely team and would do it again. The care in general at RDH before and after was pretty poor, but the section itself like Catherine said was probably the best part so I really wouldn't worry. Tip, get some of the adults nappies! You'll thank me later 😄 xx

Ive had 2 C-sections at RDH, both of mine was meant to be morning but ended up having them in the afternoon, the surgical staff are lovely! And make you feel so comfortable and at ease, the worst part for me is the cannula it took several staff members to try get it in, after that is in they will take you down to the theatre, they will be staff behind preparing while the insert the spinal, you will have your partner infront of you if you wish, and a nurse speaking to you trying to keep you calm and still, they then will lay you down and spray you with cold spray to see if the numbing is working and while they are doing that and it seems to be working someone will insert a catheter, after that is done and they have made sure you can not feel anything they will proceed, you will have wires and obs attached to you to make sure your blood pressure and heart rate is coping with the medication

I had an elective section last May & it was amazing. Very relaxed compared to my first section (in a different hospital). My aftercare wasn’t great, because it was so busy! But partners can stay the whole time so that was a great help. Good luck xx

Once the baby is here they will take them to do the weigh in and maybe quickly show you them, and after the ask if you want baby to have vitamin k injection, after the cord is clamped and they have done the initial checks they will pass you your baby while you get stitched back up, they then tell your partner to step outside they will either take baby with him or you will still have baby I still had my first but my second wasn’t aloud to feed for an hour after birth, just while they stitching you up and then they will transfer you to the recovery to monitor your obs, then after that is so done you will then be taken to a ward, I had to stay in due to not being able to pay urine within a a certain amount of time so had to have the catheter back in, but the after care hmm is questionable for me anyways, I feel like it’s rushed and it’s hard to get anyone to listen to you, but if you need pain medication keep going at them! Xx

The surgical team are amazing! My scar is so neat! Im 8wks pp and its barely visible

I had elective cesarean. Had a Friday PM one. We arrived at 12 ish and baby was born 5pm. There was a lot of waiting around beforehand so take entertainment - though I enjoyed chilling with just my partner for the last time! Surgery itself was so calm and orderly. The pins and needles and shakes were a bit scary but that's only as I didn't know it was normal. After baby is born and theyve stitched you up, they take you into recovery room where they put baby to breast. Then back to ward. After care isn't amazing, a lot of waiting around but that's just the NHS in general now so nothing bad to say about derby ward in general. We were home at 1am on Sunday morning. If I did it again I would have just stayed the night but they said we could go home Saturday night so we were just ready to take baby home. Partners can stay although I sent mine home so he could get a full night's sleep!

Make sure you have snacks and huge bottles of water. You will be thirsty as fuck 😆 I was breastfeeding while my partner was holding the water bottle for me to drink simultaneously 🤣 he would be off filling a bottle while I was downing one (This is v soon after surgery)

Thanks so much ladies! Really helpful having an idea of what to expect and your experiences. Also good to prep myself for a potentially more difficult time on the ward afterwards so we can be persistent if needed! Can I ask how your pre-op appointments went? I was told to go in to get my bloods done which I did today, but that was literally it! I’ve heard about people being measured for compression stockings, having the MRSA swabs done and being given body wash to do before but I had none of that! Not sure if that’s just how they do things at Derby or I’ve missed something? X

@Katie I didn't have any of that - did the bloods and that was it!

@Felicity oh that’s a relief! I thought I’d missed something 😅 x
