Gestational diabetes

I just found out I have gestational diabetes, watched the video the hospital sent me and picked up my kit. But did anyone else find this insanely overwhelming. There’s so much to think about and I feel like I got no real information or a chance to ask any questions..

I had my test today just waiting to see if i get called or not tomorrow :/

@Laura I just got an email.. the email told me to watch a video and pick up a package from the hospital which has information. It’s all so confusing

Oh wow that's not the greatest then is it

It’s really not..

When you picked it did they go through it at least?

@Laura nope. I had to pick it up from reception. Didn’t speak to anyone medical personal at all

That's even worse!!!! I would put in a complaint and demand to be seen as have they told you about growth scans every 3 weeks?

@Laura they have not told me about any scans yet.. apparently I have a phone appointment on the 8th of May. But that seems far away

Yeah speak to your midwife and be like I've been told I have gd they've not actually spoken to me I collected the equipment from a receptionist please help

This is my second pregnancy with GD and 2 diff hospitals, my first one I had an appointment on the day to tell me the results and show me how to record my sugars and diet changes, I would then have a call with the gd midwifes every 2weeks to discuss my readings and any concerns, we also had group meetings to discuss diet changes first time I ended up on metformin pills due to high fasting sugars. Second time around (current pregnancy) my hospital sent me a text to go collect my kit nothing else, and a paper explaining how to collect my readings, a week later there was a group call to discuss what is diabetes and another for diet change after 2 weeks had a call with the midwife 1:1 ( they do this to allow you to make the diet changes to see if you can manage it just with diet control) I unfortunately this time around have to take insulin ( and had to learn via a video) but still have phone call every 2 weeks to monitor readings and adjust dose Please feel free to message me if you have any questions!

@Nicol this is very helpful! Thank you!

Oh forgot to mention, they will most likely assign you to an obstetric team whom you will have at least 2 meetings with towards the end of your pregnancy, you will also be offered at least 2-3 extra growth scans to ensure baby is growing well and not becoming too big ( which tends to be the biggest concern with GD) they normally will do a last scan around 36weeks and have an appointment with your obstetric doctor between 36-37 to discuss labour and delivery. Sorry I know its a lot of info to take in! And can be extremely overwhelming and frustrating sometimes but know you are not alone! Wishing you all the best of luck!

@Nicol this is more helpful than the leaflet I got given in my pack. Thank you!

There is a group called Gestational diabetes UK on Facebook which is really helpful. There is loads of information on what you can eat and there is also a £5 pm subscription for all their recipes. Plus loads of posts from other mums so you don’t feel alone!

@Kirsti got the dreaded call this morning collected my kit from the receptionist an hour later but did get an appointment booked there and then whilst on the call for next Thursday to discuss it all and to have a growth scan before too it was fairly positive at my trust and they're still on board for home births too

@Laura that’s great! I’m going home to visit my parents in Denmark next week. So I will call them up when I come back and demand an appointment..

@Kirsti yeah do it all after the bank holiday and fingers crossed they'll listen as you can't be waiting until may that not acceptable have a lovely time visiting the parents x

I bought the freestyle libre device for continuous monitoring.. I’m able to control my fasting and post-prandial levels with high protein diet and post meal walks. But it does feel overwhelming.. the amount of effort required to follow a schedule for someone like me. At lunch I’m thinking of dinner and at dinner I’m thinking about my morning fasting glucose..

@Zoya I get this. I feel like I’m testing constantly. And the kit doesn’t even fit in my usual handbag, so when I’m out and about I have to bring an extra bag, which is easy to forget..
