Sertraline

FTM over here and I’ve been struggling with PPA. I got prescribed Sertraline, but I haven’t began taking because I’m combo feeding. The doctor said it’s fine to breastfeed and be on that medication, but I just don’t know. I’m just nervous on what’s going to the breast milk. Is there anybody else breastfeeding and on that medication? If so, did you notice any behavior changes with your little one?

You’re definitely not alone—I’ve been in the same boat. I’ve taken Sertraline twice, including during pregnancy & while breastfeeding. It’s actually one of the most widely studied & commonly prescribed antidepressants for pregnant and breastfeeding women. Both my kids have done really well; I didn’t notice any significant changes in behavior in my daughter when she was little, and now with my son, it’s been the same. According to research and what doctors have told me, only a very small amount of Sertraline passes into breast milk. The main side effect to watch for is mild drowsiness, but even that is rare. As long as your baby is waking up regularly to feed & seems alert while feeding, it’s generally not considered a concern. I totally understand the hesitation—it’s a big decision. But from my experience and everything I’ve read & heard from healthcare providers, Sertraline is considered a safe & effective option during this time. You’re doing a great job looking out for You&LO!

I also will say I’m very much the kind of person who likes to avoid taking meds if possible and the benefit with this is definitely worth it.

I started taking it while breastfeeding and didn't notice any changes with my son

STM, with my first I started taking it when I started experiencing PPA I started with a small dose 10mg and it helped so much. With my second I started taking it at 7 weeks and I’ve been on it for months and didn’t notice any changes with my baby. I recently got off it and been doing fine. I’m also super cautious with taking any medications. Didn’t take any while pregnant or breastfeeding but felt like this was necessary

Thank you so much for the responses ladies. You have put my mind to ease! I’ve been weighing the pros and cons and it does seem to be much more beneficial to take them.

I don’t breastfeed but I took it during pregnancy and it caused me no issues ☺️
