Car Seat Safety

Anyone travel with their little one in a work van ? We’re cancelling our cars insurance to save money in preparation for our new baby arriving . We already have a 3 front seater van . Just wondering if anyone’s travelled with their baby in a work van . I’ve bought the Joie Stages car seat , but due to how upright the seats are I’ve been unable to rear face the seat . My daughter is 16 months and I’m unsure about forward facing her but I don’t know if I have another option . Thank you (FYI we only will be using the van once a week to take her out somewhere)

Have you tried asking on extended rear facing Facebook group? As they seem really knowledgeable about good car seats and what they fit in

16 months is far to young to forward face - even if once a week - you unfortunately don’t get warning of when you might have an accident. Children’s skeletons and necks have not properly developed yet so you risk serious life changing injuries or even death forward facing before 4. As @Elaine had mentioned pop all the info on a car seat safety group - you’ll need your baby’s height, weight and veichle information. They’ll then make some recommendations. They may also be able to assist with getting a good rearward fit with your current seat. I like the bump to booster uk car seat safety group https://www.facebook.com/share/g/1C9Hz18Yf8/?mibextid=wwXIfr

I had put her in reward , but my partner could not see his mirror due to the car seat facing rearward . I didn’t want to risk him not seeing his mirror. 100% id prefer her rearward but I just don’t know if it’s possible in this vehicle

Have you tried a mirror extender like what driving instructors use? Not sure if this would work/help but could be wroth trying?

I’d post in the car seat safety group for advice - I know lots of people manage to rear face in transits etc and get round the mirror issue. You might need to invest in a more compact car seat like the avionaut sky or axkid minikid. Joie seats can be really bulky.

My 15 month old has been in a work van about 5/6 times forward facing. No issues. I don’t go out expecting/planning an accident to happen, think that’s a really weird thought to have to preempt a car accident. We’ve had no issues x

I think it’s really weird that people put their infants forward facing in car seats when all the evidence, research and science prove it is 5 times safer to rear face them. What’s the urgency to turn them? You simply never know when you are going to have a car accident so why risk your child’s life? That for me is not only bizarre but irresponsible.

@Jenny you may as well have just tagged me. It’s okay to have different opinions, your opinion is no more valid than mine. Gosh what did parents do before science made everything a money pit and everything scary. Can’t even put a blanket on a child anymore without it being a hazard in 5 different ways. Common sense has to play a part.

@Traynie I appreciate that parenting decisions often involve personal judgment and common sense. However, when it comes to car seat safety, evidence-based guidelines and facts are crucial for informing our opinion and protecting our children. We are incredibly lucky that the evidence now exists that previous generations didn’t have access to in terms of child safety. ERF seats are just as affordable as forward facing seats and most independent retailers offer payment schemes to help keep the seats accessible to all.
