Moving from US to UK

Hi everyone! I’m moving from the US to the UK with my 18-month-old, and we’ll be starting fresh — setting up everything from a crib and play area to a high chair/booster seat. I wanted to reach out to fellow moms in the group for some guidance — could you recommend any local favorite websites or groups for buying baby and toddler essentials? Also, if there are any mom groups around, I’d love to join for playdates and to connect with other moms. Thank you so much in advance!

Hey girl, what part of the UK!!

I will be moving to Reading

I live near Reading. There are a lot of items from Facebook Marketplace nearby if you're okay with secondhand stuff - prams, slides, high chairs. Aldi superstores for big wooden toys (kitchen etc)

Jojo Maman, Next, John Lewis shops nearby + amazon ofcourse

I’m in Windsor so not far at all! Happy to chat and meet up x

I have been on FB marketplace. I am searching for car seat. My daughter is 18 months, any specific suggestion on car seat pls?

Thanks ladies I will visit their online store now and later visit them in person. How is primark clothes? Curious as everyone talks about primark here in US lol

@Valentina sure Valentina! Will ping you

That’s not far from me at all! I’m in high Wycombe. There is a huge town and shopping centre in reading where you can find plenty of things, there’s even a Costco and ikea if you need any home/bulk things. And Facebook also has marketplace as well as buy and selling groups

@Christina been doing it now. But still not sure on which car seat brand is fav among mommies.

I get some things from there but not much! Normally what’s 100 cotton is advised ☺️

Maxi Cosi, Ickle bubba, joie, kindercraft are popular car seat brands especially the 360 isofix ones. I got ours from facebook marketplace but of course, there's no safety guarantee. Join local facebook groups in Reading too! It's fun to shop in Primark! Shop during very early weekeday mornings so it's not chaotic.

Groups on fb : Reading Berkshire UK Group, Reading Parents (Berkshire UK)

There are car safety groups on Facebook where you can reach out for safe second hand car seats :) x

@Kimberley good shout. I joined Car Seat Safety UK

What's the protocol in the US for car seats? Here it's rear facing until 4, I think?

Rear facing as long as possible really, we have a britax rear facing that’s up to 36kg (I think!) which should last until 7, but my girls are 99 percentile Amazonian ladies lol 😂 so hopefully at least past 5 years old (bone structure safety) xx

Join car seat safety uk on fb for recommendations. Once you've got a car sorted you can pop in LOs height, weight, car model and budget and they'll provide you with a recommendation. They also have a sister site that sell car seats and the admins all have shops. Primark is great for clothes, we buy lots there for nursery as they're nice and cheap. Ikea highchair is about £20 and great, easy to wipe clean. Next, marks and spencers, matalan all do great clothes. Smyths have lovely toys and also sell cribs, pushchairs etc. But most of their car seats aren't Swedish plus tested. Argos also sell cribs, pushchairs, highchairs etc. X

@Christina it’s rear facing until they are a certain lbs which ideally is around 3 years.

@Kimberley oh tell me about it. I have the same problem. She is 18 months, but have to put 3 years clothing

Thanks a lot ladies! These are really helpful tips!!!

Oh I'm from Reading! Welcome! It's a very very diverse and mixed town in terms of social backgrounds and income. But lots of shops. You can get affordable but good new strollers and car seats at smyths toys. We got our playpen online from wayfair. I got the high chair for free on freecycle.org. there is a Reading page too

I'm in West London now which is not too far but if you want a local to show you the London sights let me know otherwise we could make a stop while visiting my mum to show my boy where I grew up 😉

Oh yeah Alex, sure. Once I settle down we should plan to meet
