Hi I had my second son today as c section his been sleeping for 4 hours and does not even open his mouth to suck or eat anything. Is this normal? How to get him to open his mouth or suck my breast.

I don't want to worry you, but if your baby's sugar level is low, give her formula or let her nurse from your breast.

Because she was hungry

My firstborn was the same ! We used to have to really wake him up to make him feed- we’d strip him off, or tickle his feet etc. ultimately it was always a bit of a struggle to get him to need and we did end up switching to bottles, but obviously that’s not inevitable ! I wish I’d got more help- can you speak with the infant feeding team?

Definitely seek help whilst you’re in hospital. Are you able to get your colostrum into a syringe to give to your baby? I struggled a bit with both my babies but just kept asking for help and we got there. They just need to learn how to do it :-) x

I’m not even getting colostrum

I’d definitely ask for some help and support while you’re in the hospital and once out ask the health visitors we had a breast feeding support visitor come too, my second was so sleepy we used to have to wake him a lot, so strip him of change him make him a bit uncomfortable to wake him up and then feed him x

My second was also by c section and very sleepy at the beginning- to wake him up to feed we had to strip him off and change his nappy to get him awake enough. Managed to breast feed ok. If you’re still in hospital I’d ask the midwives for help - hand express some colostrum if you can - if you can’t they should be able to help and the baby should be more effective at getting it out anyway. When I had both of mine they wouldn’t let you go home unless you had feeding established (whether bottle or breast) so they should be there to support you - don’t feel like you’re bothering them press that button for help!

Yes! It’s normal with c-section babies! They’re sleepy from the drugs and the trauma! The midwives told me that because I was worrying too. They said not to stress unless he didn’t eat/wasn’t showing interest in eating around the 24 hour mark. He slept a lotttttt for like 3 weeks tbh. But he was a chunky, healthy baby, it had no detrimental impact and I never woke him to feed either. Babies only really have one purpose and that’s to eat, I just let him dictate when he was hungry 🤷🏽‍♀️ and I’ve done that with all 4.
