Sleep

My 3mo baby was sleeping straight through the night till around 7 and now we’ve started putting him down in his own room till 11 then bringing him next to me for the rest of the night he’s waking up at my around 4am. Everyone warned me hitting 3 months it would get challenging. Is this common? Tips on not letting this get progressively worse?

It is normal for them to not sleep all the way through for some time especially 3 months. Is putting him down then moving him not disturbing him an extra time? Are you able to put him down in the next to me at bedtime so then he is in one place?

Could be a growth spurt so he's hungrier, or the start of the 4 month sleep regression. Is he feeding at 4 or just unsettled?

Was there any trick to getting him to sleep through? I’m four months and wakes up every three hours.

Our is it the same - been 3-4 am like clockwork last 3 nights and then 6.30am (when it used to be maybe 4-5am and then 8am. The 3-4am slot is really making me knackered! (Which sounds crazy but you probably get it) He’s feeding (breastfeeding) in this slot but I know he can in theory sleep longer so feel like we’ve gone a bit backwards and I miss more sleep stretches (tho I know we’re still lucky). We just put Reg down between 8-9pm in his next to me with a monitor x

I wouldn’t say it sounds common, should be able to make adjustments to get back to him sleeping through if he already has been 🙏🏻 We put down at 7pm in next to me crib with monitor on, wake at 10:30pm for full bottle and nappy change then she’s back in crib for 11pm, been sleeping until 7am and first bottle is 7:30/8am. I read if they are waking during the night but having their full feeds during 7am - 10pm then try using a dummy to settle them, after 3-5 nights they should be able to sleep through again as you’ll have broken the habit. This method does stipulate to only to be use this method if they are getting their daily feeds while awake though, as could be going through a growth spurt and could be waking up hungry - which I think you’d know as they wouldn’t settle with a dummy! Good luck!!! 🙂

So many changes happen to baby’s sleep - for one it’s now lighter in the mornings which can make it hard to stay asleep if the room isn’t super dark, also growth spurts happen so increased hunger could occur at any time before weaning and then also babies who haven’t learnt yet to self settle might just wake up and need help getting back to sleep whether that’s the dummy being put back in or rocking/ patting / shushing. Sleep isn’t linear unfortunately as your baby is a different person every week and that means sleep can change with it!

@Sophie potentially the change in rooms could cause confusion for him and make him not sleep through but it hasn’t done the week before this. But maybe it’s worth a try!!

@Harriet I try to settle him with dummy but it doesent work, so only a feed settles him x

@Maxine aw this is great thank you, he’s on every 3 hours during the day and sometimes if our and he’s happy we stretch it to 4… yesterday after sticking to every 3 hours he did his full nights sleep!! x

@Gillian are you breastfeeding? 👏🏼👏🏼 My baby is on formula and I think maybe that does have an effect on his sleeping. The first month of him breastfeeding I was his soother during the night and he was awake much more often. I did let him sleep whenever he wanted during the day but now he is used to his own room he’s more awake during the day and only sleeps in his crib so the nights seem to be longer as it’s his safe place. Buttt, I think we have been very lucky as next to no one I know has a baby that sleeps through this long. Hope it gets better you Are amazing 👏🏼🤍

Amazing! I think if you get a routine going during the day then it really helps to get them sleep through sooner. The fact he’s done it so young is a fab sign and if wakes occasionally, will hopefully get back to sleeping through again soon 🙏🏻 The mornings you wake and realise they slept through are just 🤩🤩🤩

He’s combi fed but heavier on the formula. Generally would feed him when he wanted. Lately, as he’s become more aware, we’re able to stretch the time between feeds using distraction techniques (games, walks)at least in the day time. But, Oddly enough, he has seemed to have suddenly turned a corner and nearly slept through the whole night last night…except now, he’s not sleeping much in the day. Oh the irony! 😵‍💫😵🥴😂 But, grateful to finally have sleep 🙏🏻 Hope yours is doing good.
