Solo hikes

Could anyone please offer me some advice for solo hiking with babe? She's almost 9 months old, I have a carrier and an outnabout sport pram. I just really miss getting out and doing long walks/hikes, but I just can't get past the anxiety of doing it alone with babe in case something happens. I want to take her up snowdon in the next couple of months, my partner will be coming, but I'd just like to get my confidence doing it on my own also. Any tips on how to get past the anxiety? Is it just a case of going for it? 😂

Hello fellow outdoor lover! Id say build your confident up first by going to your local park. I have an 8weeks old daughter who i have been taking on local walks at the nearest park near us and also in the local woods. Weve done 5-8km walks together so far. You can do it!

It's easier than you'd think! Just make sure you pack food, water, changing gear and a change of clothes. I often take a picnic blanket to make nappy changes easier. Walking poles help alot with stability. Maybe start with shorter walks? I started doing 1 hour or so but now I can go out for 4 or 5 hours and he'll sleep in the carrier

We go walking every day in the carrier, I've taken her to a few national trust sites and been fine. I suppose my anxiety is more if I'm say 2 hours into a walk and something happens and I'm no where near the car 😩 A picnic blanket is a great idea! Do you back carrier on longer walks? She's always been on the front, but I'm wondering if a back carry would be easier uphill etc

Oh sorry, I was thinking of a backpack carrier which we now use so I walk with that. I used a soft carrier until a couple of months ago though. I found longer walks difficult when he was bigger, I was back carrying and I was using the soft carrier as it limits what you can pack to take with you. What are you worried about happening? On another note, if you're planning on using a structured backpack carrier at some point then I'd recommend getting one sooner rather than later so you can build your muscle and fitness up before your baby is too heavy! He's about 9.5kg now so add lunch and gear to it and it's a bit of a weight.

Im not sure, to be honest! Just if i fall / hurt myself / baby gets sick, etc. Just worst-case scenario 😂 im probably being ridiculous. I have been thinking about a backpack carrier. Are they worth it? I've heard mixed things, so I've been hesitant to buy one. Baby girl is around 9.5kg too.

Where are you based? I’m in south wales and there’s a local group for hiking mums so could be worth checking out in your area if there’s something similar. Xx

Oh that's a good idea Lydia. Could you do this to get your confidence up and try a solo hike from there? I've got the osprey Poco Lite and I like it, it takes some getting used to but it's much easier than a soft carrier with. Cross body bag or something. Definitely worth going and trying a load of them before you buy one.

Have you looked at blaze trails? They have lots of local groups that do different types of walks. Some are more tame and pram friendly but they also have more adventurous ones https://www.blazetrails.org.uk

I'm in Manchester, but I'm in a north Wales hiking group so I'll have a look in there, I'll also have a look at blaze trails. Thank you all for your help 🥰 x
