Weaning Essentials

Hi! My little boy is five months and we will be starting BLW next month. So, I’d love to hear your suggestions on what I need to get, which brands are good etc. Thank you 💙

Honestly nothing fancy! I bought a set from Etsy including a suction plate and bowl with a spoon and fork. Lots of bibs or just strip baby down to vest to protect clothing x

Very much recommend bibado bibs

You don't need a lot of fancy stuff. Save your money and get a few cups, bowls, spoons, forks, etc. munchkin 360s are great, and they promote good oral development with the right muscles for open cup drinking (you can also try open top cups, it certainly doesn't hurt). As far as plates and spoons etc, just get what you're comfortable with. If you don't mind plastic get that. If you'd prefer silicon or bamboo that's fine too. Just be prepared for a lot of mess and waste. It's going to happen and it won't slow down anytime soon. 🤣

Bibado bibs are a lifesaver!! Worth the money x

I use bapron bibs because I was told the arm covering bibs can restrict movement. At the beginning I used just a tray to serve food, and eventually added a spoon or fork/spork and straw cups from EZPZ. I love the utensils from there, and loved the cups too, but my youngest is testing the non spill and it’s not my cup of tea, but she is learning that cups go on their bottom. I have the plates from EZPZ, but am slowing transferring to ceramic and stainless because the silicone definitely has a weird taste now. (Anything on the market for that stuff works, don’t feel tied to a brand or selling gimmick) but most importantly, your high chair: do the research. You should have a chair that gives them a 90 degree angle at hips, knees and ankles to avoid choking. Also, find a video on infant CPR it gave me peace to know what to do in case of choking. You got this Mama!!!

You don’t really need much. Some bibs, a high chair (or floor chair with a tray), a few silicone or plastic plates/bowls/cups. Some spoons (the NumNum ones are quite good for BLW), a stick blender, and maybe some tiny Tupperware for the freezer (I’m a big fan of the Moonkie silicone baby food containers). Don’t bother buying loads of expensive pouches in the beginning - just boil or steam some veg (broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, etc) and whizz it up with a bit of their milk.

Oh, and a dog. You definitely need a dog. Maybe two.

@Kelley 🤣🤣🤣

Personally I’d recommend buying as little as possible, you don’t need any specific cooking stuff people try to sell you. Just a couple of spoons, initially I just used the high chair tray, took ages before plates / bowls. Now LO is bigger I find the ikea simple plates and bowls most useful. All the suction stuff he just pulls off. I also prefer the rubbery bibs that just have a little catchy bit on as I found the full arm ones a pain to wash, easier to just wash his hands / arms after and maybe change a T-shirt if needed. Buy stuff as you find you need it so you don’t end up with loads of wasted stuff (me). Simple tommee tippee beaker for water was what we used first! Water drinking is critical to keep things moving!
