Tongue tie

My lactation consultant told me to check the baby for tongue tie. Does anyone have experience with it? How's the procedure? My LO is bottle fed and gaining proper weight, so his pediatrician is not concerned. At the hospital, the pediatrician checked his tongue but they never mentioned a tie.

I had a tongue tie and upper lip ties release done on my kid when he was 8days. We had a hard time breastfeeding and they suggested it would also help with speech and oral health later in his life. It is not a super easy recovery, they go through periods of pain and difficulty eating. Plus oral aversions. They have to learn to use their mouth all over! It's suggested to do an oral physical therepy and some do chiropractic to help baby adjust to the change. Also it's best to make the decision younger so they have less memory and adjust faster. Less fight to do the "stretches" of the wound post surgery. You can get lazer, or they can cut and stitch. We did Lazer and he can touch his tongue to the roof of his mouth now where before he couldn't. But breastfeeding has been a battle off and on still. His latch is better and my nips arent bleeding but he gets more upset with it at times. Do research, I recommend joining a Facebook page about it. It's where I learned a lot.

@Elesha thanks for the info. How was the breastfeeding difficult for you? Was it just painful nipples ?

Firstly, when he cried after birth his tongue was not able to raise the way it should. Breastfeeding he had a shallow latch and he did not use his tongue in a wave type motion or to latch, he was using his gums to latch and would chomp at the breast. He was bruising my nipples and they were cracking. They would also have a weird flattened look with a horizontal band around it. All just indicating horrible latching. But he was gaining well because I have a strong let down. I'm glad I did the release but he still chomps. He does how ever use his tongue to latch more properly now and only slight discomfort sometimes if he latches too shallow. I hope that helps.

@Elesha how long did you have to do the exercises and when did you start seeing progress? My guy is 2 weeks postop on Monday. We’ve been doing the exercises religiously and breastfeeding as mush as possible but he still isn’t able to touch the roof of his mouth yet.

My baby had a severe tongue tie. Breast feeding was extremely painful. The hospital pediatrician immediately saw it. We were a little skeptical but got it released by an experienced ent a few days later and she immediately was feeding better and my nipple wasn’t bruised anymore. The ent used scissors and the baby didn’t cry and wasn’t really impacted at all

@Shruti oh nice to hear that baby tolerated it well. Did they tell you to go to a pediatric dentist or ENT? Not sure why the LC told us only dentists would intervene
