L&D hospital

Hey everyone. Currently 16+ weeks pregnant. I was researching a bit about L&D hospital and saw the maternity unity have been rated inadequate by the CQC since 2023. After reading the cqc report I’m not feeling filled with confidence in the safety and competence of the department. I know every birth is different and I’m not looking for specific birth stories but would like to hear some feedback of peoples experiences of delivery of the L&D hospital. Thanks in advance 🙏🏼 x

I’ve had both my babies at the L&D, two very different experiences but they are an amazing team xx

I found they did check on me every 4 ish hours and were helpful however I was there a day longer than they said I’d be was told I could go home but the doctor had to sign me off, they told me this at 10am and he didn’t come until the next morning until 9 even tho there was nothing wrong and a lot of other people were send home. The ward seems spread thin with not enough staff or rooms, I was in the waiting room crying 10cm dilated and they were telling me there were no beds. During the pushing however the nurses were amazing

I gave birth there 4 weeks ago and honestly the staff were amazing, it was my first baby so I was a bit naive about what to expect so there are things I would do differently but I felt as if I was in safe hands and received very good care, the whole department is in need of an update as the decor is very old and worn but I believe it will be moving to the new building in the autumn so that’s probably why they haven’t done anything about that, wishing you the best with the rest of your pregnancy ☺️

Had both my children there, both were emergency c-sections, Couldn't fault the hospital at all

I had all three there...2019, 2021 and 2024. The midwives and care I received was amazing. I've nothing but positive things to say about the maternity ward at the l and d x

I personally had an awful experience giving birth there, horrible midwife and just overall felt unsupported however this was covid times so could be better now x second birth was at Lister and had an amazing experience xx

I gave birth in feb. Prior giving birth i was hospitalised once overnight for foetal monitoring and I didn’t have a good experience. I waited so long for everything to be done. The health care assistant who came to check my vital signs/observation didn’t check my temperature but plotted on the chart. I myself am a nurse so i know how things are done but i am not a confrontational type lf person so didn’t say anything and also i knew i was feeling fine. Also when i have been to the maternity triage some of the staff are a bit rude, no smiles on their faces whatsoever. When i was in labour and went to triage and said i was having contractions every 2-3 mins the staff gave me a look as if. I was lying Lol. My labour progressed so quick so thankfully I didn’t have to spend much time in triage. Also when i was in pain I don’t remember any midwives spoke to me or console me, nothing at all. Thanks to my husband who was there all the time helping throughout the journey.

It wasn’t terrible overall but i was expecting better. I was thinking the midwives are gonna be with me and help me progress the labour but nope nothing.

I have had nothing but amazing experiences from luton and dunstable and honestly can't fault them. Does this also include Bedford hospital maternity unit as I've heard thats not as good but as its all under the same management it can impact stats

Had my first baby here and was induced found the midwives in maternity triages amazing but the midwife overnight on the ward was awful however the one I had during the day was amazing and even came down to delivery suite after her shift to check on me and congratulate me! Also once on delivery suite again the midwife I had there was lovely and really supportive

Thanks so much everyone!!

I’ve not had a baby there since January’23. Both of my pregnancies were managed well up until the point of birth and then it was awful. I was more or less left to my own devices, even when I needed support. I would call the bell and no one would come, when anyone did come it was very much task oriented and they would just do whatever they came to do without so much as a hello or explaining what they were doing. My babies were well and I’m thankful of that but I ended up self discharging last time. I felt very unseen and unheard. I hope they’ve changed.
