BLW is scary!

Hey mamas! I've been doing BLW with my baby for about 2 months now (since she was 6 months old), and I love the idea of it, but in practice I find it terrifying 🫣 How do I chill out? My heart just drops into my stomach any time she gags or a piece of food breaks off in her mouth, and it's holding me back from letting her try new things. Any advice would be much appreciated ā¤ļø

You need to trust her and also trust that you are preparing her food in a way you know is appropriate for her age.

It's definitely scary at first, but SO worth it! All babies I know that have done mostly BLW eat much better than those on purees for months, as puree isn't "real" food, so definitely persevere! My girl is 11 months now and hates being spoon fed anything šŸ˜…. Get yourself a good weaning book , as they also advise you on how to serve it to your baby depending on age. Plus, she will learn what she can handle, and remember that gagging is a good thing, as that helps to prevent choking! X

Just stopping by to let you know that you also don’t have to do BLW. My baby choked at 8m and I needed to save him until the paramedics arrived. Never again Im taking this risk for ā€œindependenceā€. I did homemade purĆ©es and increased the texture until he learned how to chew and take bites. By 15m he was eating the food just like us and he is almost 2 and is not a picky eater, knows how to use his utensils and feeds himself :)

Have you done a baby first aid course might help you relax If you no what to do in the unlikely event of choking also if you don't feel comfortable it's ok to do puree or could do a course of BLW

@Ana Moore this! I feel like there is so much pressure for babies to be independent in everything from sleep to food etc. if it works out then great but if it makes you feel uncomfortable then we need to question why we are doing it. We need to remind ourselves that they are just babies but we are trying to make them act and behave like independent children. We all learned to eat didn’t we and turned out alright LOL Do what works for you mama x

@Gunes exactly, my husband told me the same thing whenever I was out of my mind lol ā€œHe is only 8 months old, I promise you he will learn how to eatā€. My son wouldn’t even actually eat during BLW, half of it was on the floor or became a toy. I was all about letting him explore and all of that but I also wanted to teach him that food needs to be respected. I come from a family that dealt with hunger until my past generation and I don’t take that lightly.

I was also having trouble with BLW and I asked myself what I was scared of and it was not knowing what to do if LO did chock on the food piece. So hubbs and I did infant CPR class and bough this device. I'm still nervous but it's given me a little peace of mind when he's eating
