Childrens passport advice

Hi, I know its recommended to update your passport if you have a change of name but has anyone flown with the old name on the passport? In the process of changing our 2 Year olds name & I can't see the point in paying for a New passport when its only 5 year validity. I was planning to fly using It but my husband is worried they can somehow know. Any advice or experiences would be helpful.

As long as the names on the flight matches the passport it's fine. I changed my name after getting married, but my passport still has my maiden name cos I can't be bothered changing it, never had any issues
