I used to do bicycle legs and massage my little ones tummy, I also use infacol which has seemed to help him as he was the same and he'd be going red in the face and pulling his legs up in the air x
My girl was like this for weeks, infacol made her reflux worse, we give gripe water before bed and a probiotic in the day to help everything come out.
Thankyou !!
We do bicycle legs, hips rolled from side to side and legs up and down several times a day (in line with nappy changes). Plus tummy massage twice a day and gripe water in the evening if really bad. It doesn’t solve it by any means but it definitely eases him and he’s worse if we haven’t done that. Little and often throughout the day seems to help the most and lots of reminding myself that it won’t be like this forever!
Smitheicone gas drops are an absolute life saver for us! My son had extremely bad gas when he was younger because he has a cow milk protein allergy. I also found that the Dr Brown's bottles were the only bottles that didn't cause my son to have trapped gas and keeping him in an upright position for 30 min after he eats helps gas as well as reflux. You could also try Frida baby Windi things, they work temporarily but for immediate relief. Probiotics will most likely cause your baby to have more gas for a while if you decide to go that route and you probably wouldn't see any improvement for a few weeks. We tried gripe water & multiple strains of probiotics and none of them helped they just made his gas way worse. As others suggested bicycle kicks work sometimes and so can a gentle belly rub. I would need to burp my son after every 2-3 oz he ate. We also bought a little warming belt that goes around their belly that has an insert you stick into the microwave. I hope you can find some relief for your little one.
the Frida windi works great, but they're one time use and much easier done with a partner so obviously not a permanent solution. simethicone drops take an hour or so to kick in, but if it's a constant problem just use them more frequently. same as @Alex I've been trying a little exercise program of bicycle legs, clockwise belly rubs, and rotating the hips side to side at every diaper change, and after a week I think it's helping things move along and not get bottled up like that. now I need to get everyone who does diaper changes to keep up the program!
UPDATE: we tried gripe water last night before her bedtime feed, she went did two big burps before I put her in the crib at 8pm, but then she woke up at 10pm and has had me up every hour since. I haven’t slept more than 50 minutes at a time and most of that has been contact napping through the night. I honestly think the gripe water made it worse! She’s 5 months old and has only just started struggling like this in the last few days - any ideas what could cause a change like that?
@Christy when I tried gripe water it made it worse as well. Are you breastfeeding or bottle feeding? If breastfeeding it sounds like it could be something you are eating that's affecting your little one. If not breastfeeding any changes in the bottles you use? Sometimes they can actually just suddenly develop a cow milk protein allergy which my 5 month old son has. The only thing that has worked for us are the smitheicone gas drops and once we switched to a hypoallergenic formula his gas got so much better.
We’re bottle feeding…I’m wondering if the teat size might be too small/slow? She’s still on a mix of 1s and 2s and she’s had them since she was born.
Update : I’ve gone up a teat size to a 3 which is the recommended for 4+ months, this does mean she is now finishing bottles and drinking more than she was, but the wind issues at night are persisting 🤦🏼♀️ She is completely fine during the day, but after her bedtime feed it’s now taking me hours to fully settle her to sleep - example: last night she fell asleep on me after her bottle and I put her in the crib at 7:30pm, she then had me up soothing her and trying to get her wind up a minimum of once or twice an hour until she finally stopped needing this at around 11:15pm. Then at 2:30am she started groaning with trapped wind, I didn’t have to intervene but she groans and I can hear her struggling to pass gas, this continued at 4:30am. She has then woken for a feed at 5:30am and having been rocked a bit has gone back in the crib without issue. I’ve just been reading up on infacol but everything online says if your baby is over 4 months old it’s probably not colic?
Please any other help and advise would be so welcome…can I give her infacol even though it’s probably not colic? Would that help with wind like I’ve described? Baby massage and bicycle legs etc just distressed her further and winds her up in the middle of the night 😩
I’m really struggling now! I can’t keep having nights like this - no sleep for me and hearing her in discomfort over and over again for hours 🙈
I’m going to look into the simethicone drops now
