AITA

We went out for a family walk today and stopped in the pub on the way home. A old guy referred to our little lady as a little boy. Now I would get it if she was in neutral clothing but she was dressed so girly. When the old guy said “is wee one a boy” I replied quite bluntly with “what with a pink dress and pink tights on” My boyfriend said after he went back to his table that I was rude about it and there wasn’t any need for me to be an arse to him. I’m a 19 year old first time mam, pregnant with another for reference and this guy could have been my grandfather. Feel quite annoyed at the whole situation postpartum and pregnancy hormones don’t help.

I don’t think you were rude. Maybe a bit sarcastic..but totally understandable with pregnancy hormones. I guess tone has a part to play in this. It is annoying when people get the gender of your children when it’s pretty obvious but also get why he asked as gender isn’t a simple thing anymore

When elderly people gender my baby I tend not to correct them, it makes no difference to her life and it can upset/embarrass the person who got it wrong. All they are doing is complimenting a cute baby, they’re not trying to upset you so 🤷🏻‍♀️

You might not like this but I agree that there was probably no need for the comment, I wouldn’t say you’re an arsehole 😂 but he asked a question and was probably just being friendly. If someone asked that about my daughter I wouldn’t react like that to their face, might walk off and go to my partner “he must be blind” and laugh it off 😅 I’ve just come back from Egypt and my baby was dressed in pink dresses or flowery rompers and I still got asked by the waiters “what’s his name” or “is it your son” 🙈

I understand why it can be annoying when they misgender but it's not the end of the world and there was no need for the way you replied, it was rude in my opinion, I would have just said that she's a girl and then have a moan to my partner 🤷‍♀️

My baby was head to toe in pink with a bow in her hair and the lady in Tesco still thought she was a lad. We’ve had it quite a lot with her tbh

I don’t know why but people always seem to think babies are boys, with my first she had very little hair for ages so always had a bow on her head and must have been called a boy every day by someone 😂 you’re not the arsehole but try not to let other people, especially strangers bother you x

people always think babies and dogs are boys iv had it a lot with my little girl i don’t think you’re the asshole cos it gets really annoying i always correct people

We’re the opposite here! My boy can be dressed in blue / dinosaur / tractors but because he’s got long curly ringlet hair everyone says what a lovely girl 😂

Pink apparently used to be for a boy back in the day which probably doesn't help and although it's probably not their generation boys did used to wear dresses before being dry. It's a bit of a stretch but it's probably a learnt thing because the previous generation before then would have done it that way. My girl always get called a boy even in pink. I don't let it get to me because they're strangers. A lot of the time I don't bother correcting
