Wigan vs Bolton

Hi, I am currently 20 weeks and have been having all my care so far with Wigan hospital, however, I am closer to Bolton (10 mins vs 30 mins) and wondering whether to change hospitals. I am low risk so far and keen on a pool delivery and I know Bolton have more available than Wigan, and I also saw figures that Wigan had more emergency c-sections in November than normal births which is quite off putting. I was just wondering what other people’s experiences were like at either hospital!

I had 2 babies with Bolton hospital both pleasant experiences and the help offered throughout the pregnancy was on point, I’m currently under Wigan for my 3rd pregnancy, midwife is brilliant and so is Leigh antenatal unit but Iv found if you have any worries your on your own Iv built up massive anxiety to giving birth in Wigan tbh I’m just to far from Bolton now, I would highly recommend Bolton though x

I gave birth in Bolton hospital and had an emergency c section, personally I wouldn’t go there again as I had a bad experience, 1 of the things they did was forget to take the cannula out my spine after I had an epidural, all day until the next morning which could of turned out a lot worse for me if left there longer. Although after that was dealt with I found the after care was amazing and the midwifes were so helpful. There are other things but I wouldn’t want to off put you too much because my experience will be completely different to others and I would just go where your guts telling you any hospital will have good and bad unfortunately but that’s my opinion xxx

I had my son at Bolton in 2021, triage was very busy and left me waiting for a long time in labour without any gas and air. Ended up in emergency C-section, but think this was mainly down to be not reacting well to the pain relief and it stopped contractions which would have happened at any hospital. The support on the ward afterwards was amazing and couldn’t fault them. I am due to have 2nd baby there in Feb, and triage and day unit have been million times better, been in 4 times with bleeding and baby movement changes and never had to wait. Worth noting I think the midwife led beehive unit is still shut. So there is only one pool on the delivery ward, but from what I’ve heard it’s often available.

Had a planned C section at Wigan and was very happy with the surgery & doctors.

Thank you! This is really helpful! Especially the comment about the birth unit being closed, it is such a shame! I think my community midwife works for women who go to both. Both times I’ve been to the antenatal centre I have had one good scan and one the lady was a bit dismissive! Im not sure there is too much difference then

I had my baby at Wigan in august and couldn’t fault the care I had 😊

I had my daughter in Wigan in September 2023 and could not fault them at all throughout any of my pregnancy x

I had my first at Bolton delivery unit was great but antenatal ward and postnatal ward awful. I am a nurse and the care was disgraceful my baby was tiny, she didn’t feed we got no support I was discharged with no support and she hadn’t fed. I was spoken to like rubbish by numerous staff, I vomited and my mum cleaned it up staff 2 midwives spoke to her like rubbish when she asked where to put the stuff. It was awful. The bathrooms were mouldy and black. Community care by Wigan was amazing with both my daughters. I didn’t want Wigan hospital as I live live so it’s far. Had my second at Warrington and outstanding couldn’t have asked for better and I had an emergency section they saved my daughters life and I was in for 4 days, they really took great care of us.

I had my baby at Bolton one off the best hospitals by far! Don't like wigan.... (due to personal reasons) so I would say Bolton plus your closer makes sense 🙂

I’ve had both my babies at Wigan, first baby I got induced with no complications at all, whereas my 2nd baby I ended up with an emergency c section because of cord prolapse. I honestly could not fault Wigan at all, the maternity care was exceptional. Only problem with Wigan is the parking 🙄 xx

Bolton is too busy and you won’t get the personalised care you need, I’m closer to Wigan but will be moving to Bolton before baby gets here but not changing my hospital.., we’ll just have to leave early when contractions start

I had my first at Bolton and it was such an awful experience, they took my daughter for tests multiple times and didn't tell me why. I only found out after I requested my maternity notes months after. I'm having my current baby in Wigan this time, already the care is amazing and I feel like I'm being kept informed constantly 😊
