Can a midwife prescribe antidepressants?

I’m 27 weeks pregnant and my midwife has been checking in on my mental health at every appointment so far (I expressed concerns at my first appointment that I might need to start taking antidepressants for low mood & anxiety). I’m now at the stage where I need to do something to help myself so feel I need to begin medication - should I wait for my next midwife appointment (in 10 days) to discuss this with her or just go direct to my GP? Not sure if it needs to go through the midwife to get help from the perinatal mental health team too or if that’s something the GP would do.

I had a similar experience with my mental health and I spoke to the midwife but they sent me to the gp who was the one who mentioned antidepressants I’m not 100% sure but I don’t believe the midwife can prescribe the medication I may be wrong tho. Hope you feel better

No. They can’t prescribe anything. They will refer you to GO

They can't prescribe any medications

Even if they were a midwife prescriber mental health medications would be outside scope of practice. I would contact your GP in the first instance.
