Expressing Vs formula

Hi, I have a 4 week old girl and due to her being small when she was born we had some latching issues and she never really took to breastfeeding. I however really wanted to give her my breast milk so fed colostrum for the first 4 days then due to her not latching and baby blues I fed her formula. 4 weeks on I am managing to feed her almost exclusively breast milk except maybe 2/3 Oz to top up in the night time so I can sleep a couple hours, it is so hard and time consuming. I am getting about 4/5 Oz everytime I pump which is what she wants. I just want an opinion, is it actually worth expressing or am I just making my life harder for no reason and is formula just as good? Thank you in advance!

There’s no doubt that breast milk is nutritionally better than formula, but fed is best so if it’s too much hassle for you and will make you stressed and unhappy then formula is the way forward. I use a pump every now and then and have EBF with this baby, but my first I combi fed until 8 weeks and then just formula, as that’s what felt best for me at the time.

Keep trying with the breastfeeding! My twins were tiny and they still have such a shallow latch but they take plenty of milk ( they get really efficient) I exclusively pumped for a weeks and it wasn't until they reached about the 10lb mark before they could breastfeed but now they can it's soo much easier...less bottles to sterilise, the pumping etc xx

A fed baby is whats important don’t stress yourself out as long as baby is healthy

Totally up to you mama! I exclusively pump, tried to breastfeed in the hospital but no joy on the latch. Fed some pre harvested colustrum, and took ages for me to pump enough to fully feed. Did formula top ups in the hospital, but since coming home I over supply and she feeds off expressed breast milk entirely. Do whatever works for you, your health and sanity are important as well x

As long as their bellies are full you're good. I've exclusively pumped for 9 months. Not going to lie it is a lot of work. But I wanted to breastfeed and my baby wouldn't latch due to being too sleepy. I got to routine down after the first month. Having a hands free pump really helped. If you want to pump its worth noting that the general rule is 1 to 1.5oz of breast milk going a max of 3 hours. And pace feed

I’m nearly 11 months into pumping.. i won’t lie it is exhausting and if life is easier with formula you do that! Mental health is very important x
