Milk supply

I want to start giving my little one breast milk bottles at night instead of feeding directly because it takes ages and I am sleep deprived. At the moment i am only pumping in daytime. Will not feeding him directly at night nor pumping at night affect my milk supply?

How old is baby?

My lactation consultant and pediatrician encouraged us to do this early on, I want to say we started when baby was only about 3-4 weeks. I would still wake up to breastfeed in the night. Then around 9-10 weeks he started sleeping 6-7 hours through the night. We bottle feed before bed and then I pump and drain before I go to sleep and then after morning feed I pump again or use the Haaka. I have seen a slight decrease in milk supply but baby is still gaining weight and growing fast so I’m not too worried. Everyone is different though so talking to your pediatrician / a lactation consultant probably wouldn’t hurt !

@Sophie he’s almost 6 weeks old!

@Lexus thank you for your response! My little one is almost 6 weeks old. Currently he only sleeps for 2 hours stretches at night and once he is up, Breast feeding him takes 1, 2 or sometime more hours. Could you please let me know how your little one is sleeping through the night at 9-10 weeks??

I’m not sure if I have a great answer as to how unfortunately… but I did some reading and have started gently trying to follow this feeding routine but I am very flexible and will feed more if he’s hungry/ during growth spurts. 4-6am Breastfeed 8-9am Breastfeed 12-1pm Breastfeed 3-4pm Breastfeed 7:30-8pm - 5oz Bottle Breastmilk then bed. Every 3 days bath before. I will sometimes do a 3oz bottle around 6pm if he’s fussy and can’t wait but I always try to give him a full 5oz before bed so that his tummy is nice and full. When he wakes up for his first feed he’s normally out in about 20-30min. I try not to disturb with diaper change, only if there’s poop. His bowl movements have changed. Pediatrician and all of the books I’ve read says this is normal. Sometimes we go 1-2 days before a bowl movement so we do bicycle kicks to help elevate gas. He doesn’t seem bothered so we don’t worry. I was right there with you every 2 hours, remember it won’t last forever and you’re doing great!
