Controlled crying - no success on first night

We tried controlled crying last night with my 5 month old - we’ve been in the 4 month sleep regression for 8 weeks and can’t take the sleep deprivation anymore 😣 We tried to let him self settle for an hour in total (going in every 1-2 mins to comfort for 3 seconds as advised by sleep consultant) but he just wouldn’t stop crying so had to rock to sleep. Same happened every wake up (hourly) after that. At 3am we gave up and co-slept as he’d only had 2.5 hours sleep in total since bedtime at 7pm and worried he would become overtired. Is this normal? Are we doing something wrong? Going to try again tonight so any advice would be welcome!

Sleep training is usually not advised until 6 months at the earliest, even amongst those who support it. It could be that your little one just isn't old enough to self-settle yet.

Agree with the previous poster, but you know best as mummy! Have you ruled out any red flags for health issues? Then if no potential health issues, what’s sleep schedule like in a 24 hour period, from wake up, nap time and nap length to bedtime. Is there enough sleep pressure at bedtime?

I would advise not to try if you are just going to end up co sleeping. If you do that you are building up his resistance in crying as he will learn that he just needs to keep crying in order to get out of the bed. Worst thing to do because it will make the training harder in the future.

Way too young to sleep train. Also could be teething early.
