Low hemoglobin and iron

I have had issues with my bowels and had a colonoscopy scheduled but then realised I was pregnant so it got cancelled, I’m now 29 weeks and midwife said I needed iron tablets and to take them with food due to my stomach issues. I thought I was going to die I could not stop vomiting. My diet is great I cook meals from scratch enjoy plenty of red Meat. I’m concerned of the reason why my iron would be low. Has anyone had this? Is there anything else I can have instead of the tablets? Feel like I’m already putting iron in but my body is not absorbing

I'm the same. Decent, varied diet, red meat etc but incredibly low iron in both my pregnancies. It just takes a lot out of you so our bodies sometimes need some help 🤷🏻‍♀️

My iron levels are ok- only advice is to take care of your vitamin C levels. Also if you drink lots of tea, make it a while after meals as apparently tannins in tea can make iron absorption lower. Also try to get it from a variety of sources like beans etc, but that at least is just what I have tried. I seem to be borderline but I had bad HG earlier, but luckily had good iron stores pre pregnancy. I hope you get it sorted! 😊

I have hyperemisis, and picked up every bug going. My irons been fine, then just spent 2 nights/days in hospital with a respiratory infection and my iron levels dropped. It’s normal in pregnancy especially last trimester as baby takes everything that’s good in your body for their growth! Do try your absolute best to take them though! (Your baby will be absorbing what your eating🥰)

Thank you xx

I struggle swallowing tablets so GP prescribed me liquid iron (ferrous fumerate). Some people have said this can be gentler on the stomach than the tablets. Avoiding caffeine and dairy helps with absorption, as well as taking with something high in Vit C (like orange juice). I've been taking mine in the evening with a little orange juice as in the mornings I'll have caffeine and dairy. Even with a balanced diet its common for iron levels to become lower in pregnancy for some women. Hope this helps xx

It’s been 2 days since I had the iron pill and I still feel terribly nauseated. It is like being back on the first trimester all over again, I struggle to eat I think it messed up my stomach more than it already was. Any advice appreciated?

It’s unfortunately a common side effect, my mum struggled with this and got some supplements online spatone especially is a liquid form it tastes metallic which isnt nice but people dont tend to suffer the same side effects x
