Birth Certificate & British Passport

Hi Ladies, So my husband has been verbally abusive from time to time since I got pregnant from time to time. I already know this is a toxic environment for both me & my baby but I have been having a dilemma as to when to leave. So instead of now, I decided it’d be best after baby is born. I’m not a British Citizen but my H is British so this means the baby will become British through their dad if he is on the birth certificate. However, I have been contemplating on whether to have the dad on the birth certificate as I’ve read & been advised it’ll cause complications later around parental rights & being able to travel with my child for holidays abroad. At the moment, it feels like I have no choice as the father will need to be on the birth certificate so my child can get the British passport. Could any non-British mums or mums who Brits with this info provide any guidance if there’s another way out?

The child should get Brit citizenship if you have settled status and even if there is no father on the birth certificate. It will cause difficulties if the dad is on the birth certificate yes, but think it may be helpful if you need to prove that he needs to pay money to support the child.

You should be okay if you have Settled Status. I’d advise going to Citizens Advice though https://reissedwards.co.uk/family-law-blog/can-a-father-not-be-put-on-a-child-birth-certificate/

@Amanta how about if the person doesn’t have settled status?

I'm not sure, maybe if you get settled status now or British citizenship now? I've gone through the process myself just message me and I'll talk you through it if you want. Or ring citizens advice as above x

@Amanta the baby will be born before my time to apply for settled status comes. So the only option is to rely on the father for the passport & I know having him on the birth certificate could cause me more issues later down the road when I leave. I’m just wondering what to do that would be best for both the baby and I. I can’t continue being around someone who constantly disrespects me.
