Not sure the risks but I know it’s really important to take it in the first 12 weeks Set an alarm on your phone to remind you x

I have to put mine by the kettle so I remember to take it when I have a cup of tea!

Is this the 400mcg or the 5mg? Folic acid "banks" in the body so you draw from your stock gained pre-pregnancy until it runs out. It's better to take the supplements as many do not get enough folate from their diet. The risk in not taking it is if you are folate deficient or have folate deficiency anaemia, you may have a heightened risk of a neural tube defect in your baby. These are very rare, but do happen. However, some studies actually say the link is genetic and not linked to diet/not taking supplements. Some women take their supplements every day and end up with a neural tube defect. Some women don't take supplements at all. Some women take their supplements but throw them back up. Women who are TTC are recommended to have 400mcg of folic acid per day, too, so they have enough folic acid in their "bank" for the days after conception. After 12 weeks, additional folic acid has no benefit to pregnancy so just make sure to eat as well as you can. If it's the 5mg additional folic acid

Unless you are very high risk for a neural tube defect, not taking it won't harm as long as you are taking your regular pregnancy vitamin alongside.

Hope this helps.
