Supply Worry

Baby is 2 weeks old and we’ve got our TT referral appointment on the 24th, so far he’s been gaining weight despite his anterior TT (very obvious when he opens his mouth) but over the last few days his latch has become much worse, it takes almost 5 minutes (which doesn’t seem long but it brings me to tears) for him to get latched on and even then it’s a rubbish shallow latch which he falls off easily and not comfortable. I feel as though he must have been riding on my PP letdown so far but I’m now concerned about my supply dipping going into week 3 as my breasts don’t feel like they’ve been emptied at all, he’s always falling asleep after 5 minutes on 😭 Can anybody relate and what did you do to maintain your supply before your appointment? What should I do in the interim? I assume it will need to be cut 😢

Bless you!! How frustrating. Keep trying with the latch. Also try to get into his mouth and do some tension release as sometimes a lot of it is tension. Hey lovely, my baby was also TT. He had it cut but before that it was excruciating as we struggled to get a deep latch. Have you got a pump? I would try to pump after he’s fed to keep your supply up. Then you can give him a bottle and give your nips a rest. So if he’s only on for 5 mins then try pumping another 10 - 15 mins on that boob. I didn’t have a pump at first and hand expressed into a bottle and gave him the bottle. Very time consuming but it worked! It will all sort itself out after the cut! Xx

Thank you both for all your help ♥️ I think I’m getting a blocked duct today too which isn’t ideal 😢 I have a pump somewhere but I’ve been so reluctant to use it so not to have an oversupply but I wonder if I’ll need to now. I’ve not had much luck with hand expressing but I’ll try again! I wonder if we just go private and get it done sooner, 24th feels so far away

Ah, this sounds really tough. My baby had a tongue tie (though posterior) I paid to have it released privately at 4 weeks but it reattached (or wasn't done completely). His NHS appointment came though at 7.5 weeks and the oral surgeon wanted to do it under general anaesthetic. He ended up having it done under the GA at 10 weeks old. His latch got worse and worse until it was done. I was really worried about my supply but it didn't lower! In fact, I think my body probably compensated for the tongue tie as I had a really stronge let down and just loads of milk, which wasn't the case with my first baby. We also did exercises after to release tension. I hope our story can give you some hope as my baby is still fully breastfed at 7 months and is taking solids well!

@Ella Thank you so much for sharing ❤️‍🩹 It really does give me hope! I think hormones and sleep deprivation (and possibly overdoing it…who goes to soft play 2 weeks pp 🤦‍♀️) are giving me worse anxiety about it but I’m sure one more week will be fine. He’s also got a stuffy nose which is making latching almost impossible anyway 😵‍💫

@Madeleine one thing that I did do, to ensure that my baby was getting enough milk and my supply didn't drop, was breast compressions. I'd forgotten about that x

@Ella The TT person we’re seeing suggested this too so will give it a go! Thank you

@Madeleine Also before you make a private appointment have you called the hospital to see if they could see your baby sooner? I rang them practically in tears as my nipples were in so much pain and they fit me in a week earlier, worth a try!! X

@Katherine I’ve messaged the person saying we are flexible and to please let us know if anything comes up sooner, another friend was referred 2 days before us and has an appointment 2 days before us too so I know they’re allocating on a first come basis, but if it comes to it I will. I think he’s gaining weight he’s not super priority which imo makes sense. Saline nose drops have made the latch a little better already♥️
