What would you do?

My little boy came back from the childminder on Monday with this bite mark on his leg and a large graze/scrape on his back. We only noticed when changing his nappy once we were home and the childminder never mentioned anything at pickup. When questioned, she said she had no idea about it, that he’d given her no cause for concern and that she’s always supervising. She has two dogs and the bite mark is too big to be another child. There’s no way that he wouldn’t have screamed/cried when this happened so she would definitely have noticed even if she wasn’t watching. We’ve decided he’s not going back, he’s never settled there, once came home smelling like dog wee (again, she said she had no clue that time) and now this. I guess I’m just curious what others think - does it look like a dog bite? Do you think she didn’t mention anything because doesn’t want to be reported to Ofsted? I am going to raise a concern with Ofsted anyway, which I think is just where they log it and build a case if anything else is reported, but should I do more?

Before reading I definitely thought that was a bite

Definitely a bite but looks human to me and adult which is awful 🤷‍♀️

Definitely do not take him back there

What breed of dogs are they? With dog bites you tend to have puncture holes (or at least bigger/nastier marks) from the canines either side where incisor marks are visible and bruising. I’d say that looks more like a human bite personally.

It look like a bite but not a dog bite. It’s too round to be a dog bite

Children bite, I’d be more concerned she didn’t know it had happened. When my son got bitten at nursery they called me to tell me (it was a big one on his arm).

Its definitely a bite of some sort, I’m sort over that at this point as there’s no way to prove who/what. And young children bite and get into scraps. I get that. It’s more about her response when questioned and then because she “knew nothing” the inference of neglect because he would’ve 100% cried and/or pushed back. There’s been no apology, no accident log or anything like that. He would cry hard every time I pulled onto her drive, as soon as he saw the house. Would always be silent and sad at pick up. He goes to another childminder the other half of the week and doesn’t act like that at all. He’s come home smelling of ammonia previously, which I later read was what dried dog wee smells like. She “knew nothing” then either, even though the smell was so overpowering it transferred to my clothes just from holding him. I’m just really sad that I kept sending him there, thinking he just needed time to settle, but perhaps it was more than that 😢

You could always consider calling the LADO if you think the other children they mind are also at risk. What age are the other children? As it's quite a big bite. My 9 month bit me recently and the bruise is about the size of a 20p

Doesn’t look like a dog bite, there would be more bruising if so, looks like a child or human bite

I wouldn’t feel comfortable having my children around dogs at childcare.. just a personal preference.

Do not send your child back and please report so that there is an investigation, this prevents any other child coming to harm. I agree with Maria, contact LADO x

@Eden looks like a human adults to me too and it’s scary to even have to consider that. I’m glad she has stopped her LO from going there!

It's looks like a human bite to me, a dog bite would have more puncture wounds

That’s definitely not a dog bite it’s more like a human bite. Definitely report to Ofsted and never take him back there they are abusing him.

As much as I hate to say it that looks like an adult bite! Definitely report, if nothing else for peace of mind, they may investigate and there is nothing wrong but you know you did the right thing xxx

Thank you to everyone who’s commented. I’ve shown the pictures and in real life to some friends of friends (an officer and a vet) who have said that this could be a level 2 dog bite from a small dog, which is where the skin isn’t punctured but is bruised. The snout would come at the angle from the side, not how I think most are picturing a human bite. Also, the picture that I didn’t upload of my sons back, could be from a small paw with the grazes lining up with claws. Anyway, I’ve reported to all relevant authorities and he’s obviously not going back. Just want everyone to be vigilant with childcare, this lady was recommended by a friend whose little girl went there for 2 years. The lady in question is very normal and nice with a lovely clean and tidy home, she looks after a lot of SEN children who she said all find the dogs really calm and comforting, so there were no immediate red flags.

that doesn’t look like a dog bite to me

Looks like a human bite rather than dog bite
