5 day old
I now have a five day old that I am exclusively breast-feeding and I am pumping a little bit before feeding because my breast are so engorged that she can’t get a good latch around my nipple, but I’m running into the problem that she starts choking towards the end of the feeding because she falls asleep and the milk piles up in her mouth, no matter how hard I try to catch the moment she falls asleep. Sometimes she starts choking.
Is this something that newborns are just able to handle on their own or what should I be doing?
My daughter used to fall asleep and I’d have to get her naked, tap her feet and try to keep her awake. When you see her fall asleep take your breast out. You can also try a different position maybe side lying and that may help. Your milk will adjust and having a lot of milk is a good thing. You’re doing so great you won’t have to pump long term unless you want to because your milk will adjust to your baby’s needs. Maybe visit lactation and they can help you get a better and more efficient latch. It takes time to learn your baby and have your baby learn to feed.
