My husband and I joke that it triggers birth memories to have his head push through a hole. When it upsets him we always go 'Its happening again!!!!'

Yep! It's hit or miss though. Most times he's great, sometimes he acts like we're torturing him lol.

Yep he LITERALLY starts crying instantly

I wonder if it’s some sort of innate protective behavior that would alert us that something is over their face

I've been trying to make it more fun and less scary for him by singing the words "up and over" when I put the shirt over his head. That usually stops him from crying and makes him giggle 😃

This was a huge problem for us too . However I noticed that if we are singing or talking to while we are getting him changed he will tolerate it ! :)

If it's a onesie buttons at the bottom- I pull it on from the bottom. The shoulders are extra wide to allow it to slip over the shoulders down that way in case of blowouts you don't have to pull it over their head. So I just put it on from the bottom too so my daughter is less bothered

My 5 month old doesn’t seem to mind the onesies going over her head, but God forbid a sweatshirt or hoodie. She will scream bloody murder unless my brother is putting it on. Let me continue by saying not even 5 minutes before this she is putting the blanket over her face playing peek-a-boo (supervised of course).
